Summerhill College Student Council Congress

After many months of hard work and preparation, the Summerhill Student Council had their inaugural Congress on Thursday the 16th of May 2019 in the Gillooley Hall. The novel idea, first brought to the council by Mr. Moriarty in September, had been discussed and planned for months. Essentially what was envisioned was a meeting of the all class representatives, 64 in total,l in a venue outside school where ideas for the betterment of the College would be brought up, thrashed about and, if deemed to be realistic and practical, added into the new 3 Year Action Plan. It was to be an essential component of the new Council along with the revised Constitution.
With the formation of the new Student Council and Executive in March the Congress was given top priority. Many hours both during and after school were put in by Mr. Gormley and the hardworking Council to ensure the day went smoothly. A number of venues in town were scouted but in the end the nearby Gillooley Hall was chosen. Its interior with its imposing high ceiling, good acoustics and long unique stained glass windows gave the event an air of officality and style. The Hall was set up for the day after school on the 15th of May by a group of Council members with help from Mr. Gormley and the building's caretaker.
Proceedings kicked off at 9:20 with a quick opening address from Mr. Keogh where he praised the concept of the Council and urged us to use the opportunity wisely. This was followed by a speech by Chairman Conor McDermott who gave a brief history of the new Council, the intended vision for Congress, the Lundy Model which partly inspired the Congress and also proposed some constitutional amendments which were then voted on. After that Access Officer in St. Angela's College Mr. Philip White, who was once Home Youth Liaison Officer in Summerhill spoke briefly, again praising the Congress. He urged us to be realistic and use our time wisely as well as giving us a run through of the day.
With the speeches out of the way the Council got down to the brass tacks. The questionnaire results for the areas Wellbeing and Environment were displayed via projector and for the next hour and a half the council discussed them, members of the Executive walked from table to table helping people, new ideas were brought up and at the end of each heading discussion each table presented one idea which the Executive recorded. Each idea was then voted on by a show of hands and those that received most votes were brought forward the next stage in the formulation of the 3 Year Action Plan.
A short break that included a selection of biscuits and tea, work on the next 3 areas,, Facilities, Finance/Charity Work and Student Awards, commenced at 11:10. The discussion of these 3 topics followed a similar format as that on the first 2. and went on until 12:30. The members of of the council then had lunch, and options included chicken curry, garlic and cheese potato and veg curry all of which were eaten with gusto by the lads. After cleaning up the hall and the lads left shortly after 1.
The Congress was a massive success, especially considering it was the first time it's like has been done by the school, maybe the first it has been done by a school in Ireland. Its success is testament to the hard work and dedication of Mr. Gormley and the Student Council. It also illustrates that management in the school is willing to listen to and foster participation of the student body in school affairs, be it in small affairs like microwaves or bigger ones such as policy development. May it be only onwards and upwards from here on in!
