Father John Leogue (1960-2016) was a former student and teacher at the college. This award is sponsored by his family in his memory. The Father John Leogue College of the Immaculate Conception Ethos Award is conferred on either: 1. a student of the college,   2. a parent of a currently enrolled student,   3. a staff member (past or present) or 4. a past–student. They must have contributed in a particular consummate fashion to the Catholic Ethos of the College as expressed in its Mission Statement and Motto. The recipient will have shown in a particularly demonstrative fashion commitment to contributing to the life of the college community in a practical manner which focuses on living out the Gospel of Jesus Christ by being guided by the school’s motto “to be doers of the word” (Estote Factores Verbi – James 1:22) Each year members of the Board of Management, Staff of the College and the Student Body will be invited to nominate candidates for the award citing how in particular they fit the criteria above. The award will be decided by a committee consisting the Chairperson of the Board of Management, one of the Patron’s nominees to the Board of Management, the Principal, Deputy Principals and the School Chaplain. Should any members of the committee be nominated for the award they shall exempt themselves from the decision making process. In exceptional circumstances the selection committee may petition the Board of Management to have the award conferred on someone who is not at past or present student of the college, parent of a currently enrolled student, or a past or present member of staff. We welcome nominations for this years award which must be submitted via email to info@summerhillcollege.ie by 4pm on Friday September 27th 2019.

The ceremony included a procession of symbols of the year group, readings from scripture, prayers and reflections provided by students. The College choir provided some beautiful music to accompany the liturgy. The Mass was presided over by Fr Gerard Cryan. Bishop Kevin Doran sent his well wishes as he was unable to be with us due to attending a meeting in Rome.
