Catholic Schools Week (CSW) took place from Sunday 27th of January to Sunday 3rd of February. The theme of this year’s Catholic Schools Week is Catholic Schools: Celebrating the Work of Our Local Catholic Schools. The week began on Sunday 27th with a Mass in the Cathedral for the Catholic Schools in our parish. Our wonderful choir, accompanied by staff, joined the Cathedral choir to provide some beautiful liturgical music for the Mass. On Monday 28th all of our 2nd year, Transition year and 5th year students were accompanied by their teachers in joining local parishioners for the 10.30am Mass in the Cathedral. On Tuesday 29th January our RE team took part in an RE in-service afternoon in the Star of the Sea centre in Mullaghmore. On Wednesday 30th January our 6th year retreat took place in house which was facilitated by the retreat team from An Tobar Nua. On Thursday 31st January we were joined by local clergy for our Grandparents Mass with 1st year students and their grandparents. On Friday 1st February Mass was celebrated in the College Chapel for staff and students to celebrate St Brigid's Day. We celebrated our faith in our Catholic school and how this faith connects us to others. This faith calls for a ‘free,’ ‘active,’ and ‘communal’ response. Therefore, our faith calls us to action together.

On Thursday 31st of January our 6th years participated in their annual retreat day. This year the retreat was facilitated in the school by An Tobar Nua retreat team. An Tobar Nua has been working with Secondary Schools for over ten years through day retreats hosted at An Tobar Nua in Galway and in schools around the country. Through the use of video, music, games, guided reflection, and personal stories, the team helps students explore themes such as Life to the Full, Friendship with God, Bullying, Social Media, Steps to Happiness, Resilience, Why Jesus, and Positive Mental Health. The team interacted with students on topics that are highly relevant and responsive to the challenges and pressures that youth are dealing with daily. Feedback from students about the day was extremely positive with students sharing that they especially enjoyed the testimonials from the team, the discussions, games and the cookies! Many thanks to Mike and the team for joining us for the day.

As part of the build-up to EURO 2020, where four games will be hosted in Aviva Stadium, the National Football Exhibition helps to celebrate 60 years of the European Championships - as well as some Irish footballing history too. This exhibition has a distinct Sligo flavour and incorporates elements of footballing history from the Connaught region. Students explored the six different zones that represent various parts of Irish & European football, and were able to see rare match programmes, unique match jerseys, treasured memorabilia as well as practicing their commentary skills in the recording booth and testing their footballing knowledge in the quiz stations.

Ms Kellie Leonard RIP

Over the last month, as a College community we have been trying to come to terms with the sudden loss of our dear friend and colleague, Ms Kellie Leonard RIP. Our loss, however, is slight compared to the deep burden of grief experienced at this time by her mum Mary, her sisters Tara and Danielle, her brother in law Eoin, and her nephew Jack. Ms Leonard joined the staff of Summerhill College in August 2018. In her short time among us, she made a lasting impact on all she encountered. She was often the first member of the teaching staff into school in the morning and one of the last to leave in the evening. This sense of dedication to her teaching was matched by the passion she had for her subject as well as the kindness, care and empathy she displayed to all. Kellie had deep faith in Christ and a love for the message of the Christian Gospel. In her own quiet way she was a powerful witness to this and was a passionate advocate and supporter of the unique faith based ethos of our College. We cannot put words on the shock at her parting or the grief that remains. We cannot answer questions like why Kellie? Why so soon? Why at such a young age? All we can do is take some sort of reassurance from the faith, that meant so much to Kellie in this life, that she now rests in God’s love and care. We would like to thank the many people who have made contact in the last few month to offer their sympathy and help. Thank you to our educational colleagues both locally and nationally, parents and the many friends of the college who have been in touch to offer prayer and support at this time of loss. Let us continue to keep Kellie’s Mother, her sisters, family and friends in our thoughts and prayers at this time and all those who will miss her terribly. May she Rest In Peace.
