Summerhill College wishes to acknowledge the work and speed at which the fire in the old building was brought under control last night. Thankfully no one was hurt and there was minimal damage done. As neighbours and former owners of the building, we are grateful to the Fire Service and an Garda Siochana. The old school has been a significant feature of the Sligo skyline for over a century. It holds many memories for past pupils, parents, teachers and staff. This nostalgia is still evident when we hold class reunions and alumni reminisce about their time there, as it was when the building was sold in 2016 and we moved into our current school across the road. As part of the Sligo community, we appreciate the interest in the old school building and look forward to its ‘renewed life’ under new ownership. Summerhill Board of Management

Dear Parent/Guardian, Happy new year and I hope this note finds you and your family well during this challenging time. Yesterday evening, the Department of Education and Skills decided that schools are to return to online learning for the remainder of January. As was communicated to parents/guardians and students last August, we already have in place a timetable for a lockdown scenario which we will now implement. The staff of the college have undertaken training in how to use online platforms to engage students and content will continue to be delivered during this period. The timetable for classes has been sent to your son's email account. This contingency timetable involves online engagement with presentations and webinars delivered through Google Classroom between the hours of 9:00am and 12:45pm. Students will have the opportunity to complete assigned work in the afternoon. While the presentations may be given by another member of the teaching staff, the assignments will be submitted to your son’s normal timetabled teacher for feedback. Online Information sessions will be emailed to students at 8.55am on Monday morning to go through all of this again and clarify the arrangements. In these online information sessions, we will explain to students that if they are doing two subjects that appear to be on at the same time on the lockdown timetable in an option slot, that they will do one of the subjects at the scheduled time, and the other one later in the week, where a slot appears that they do not have an option subject in. This will make it easier for your son to follow the schedule of classes through the week. It is imperative that your son engages with online learning in the coming days and weeks and that you contact us if you have any issues or concerns. If you experience any problems with access to your son’s school email account or google classroom codes please email info@summerhillcollege.ie Most students should already have been enrolled in and using Classroom and there email. An Online Information Evening will take place this coming Monday, January 11th at 8:00pm to explain how the system will operate and how you can support your son's progress during this time. In the meantime we ask you to continue to encourage your sons to follow HSE guidelines with regard to Covid and to limit their social contacts as much as possible in the hope that we can make a swift return to normal school life as soon as possible.
