Summerhill CanSat Team 'Kepler' Claim Regional Title

A massive congratulations to team 'Kepler' ( Conor Curley, Rory McVeigh, Robert Gaynor and Ben O'Reilly) who won the regional finals of the CanSat competition today in IT Sligo, with an impressive launch of their satellite in perfect weather conditions, and a very in dept and knowledgeable presentation of their data to the judges. Well done also to our second Summerhill team 'Can U Not' ( Sean Hynes, Tom Forde, Bryan Costello and Diarmuid Brennan) who gave 'Kepler' a run for their money A CanSat is a simulation of a real satellite, integrated within the volume and shape of a soft drink can. The challenge for the students is to fit all the major subsystems found in a satellite, such as power, sensors and a communication system, into this minimal volume. The CanSat is then launched to an altitude of a few hundred metres by a rocket or dropped from a platform or captive balloon and its mission begins: to carry out a scientific experiment and achieve a safe landing. CanSats offer a unique opportunity for students to have a first practical experience of a real space project. They are responsible for all aspects: designing the CanSat, selecting its mission, integrating the components, testing, preparing for launch and then analysing the data. The team now progress to the national finals in April. and we wish them the very best of luck in their preparations.

Last week some of the TY students took part in a full day workshop, devised and presented by national broadcaster Eamonn Lenihan. This course is offered to transition year students through Music Generation. Participants got the opportunity to use Apple computers, Pioneer DJ hardware, Cubase music production software & an iPhone to make their own “as live” radio programme. Throughout the day group members assumed the role of Producer, Presenter, Sound Engineer, Contributor, Production Co-ordinator, Publicist, and Video Editor. Students learned about the value of teamwork and the importance of detailed preparation; and came away with a heightened appreciation of music and the process of making radio. At the end of the day each student received an MP3 copy of their own individual programme.
