Kayak Club Trip To Boyle River

Archived : 23 Nov 2017, 12:00 AM
Friday 22nd of September saw kayak club members Rory McVeigh, Ben O'Reilly, Conor Curley, Barry Convey and Alan Moore head to Boyle river.
Boyle river is an easy grade 2 river and the boys gained experience in guiding the rest of the group down a rapid safely. All of the boys showed great skill and they made the rapids more challenging for themselves by surfing waves and breaking out in difficult eddies. (Breaking out is moving from the current into an area of slow moving water). Unfortunately, our TYs could not attend because of work experience.
Congratulations to Conor Curley who attained his level 3 skills award on the the trip. This is an exceptional achievement for someone who is paddling less than one year as usually it takes 3 years to get to this ability level. Rory McVeigh looks set to have his level 3 in the very near future. It is a credit to the boys that they are so determined but it also confirms what a superb location (the Glasshouse) we have for skills development.

Summerhill College welcomes European Fitness Week which runs from September 23rd - 30th. This includes National Fitness Day on September 29th.
As part of our drive to become a Health Promoting School we plan to use this week to build on the fantastic work we already do as an active school.
On Friday September 22nd there will be a presentation from Irish Life in recognition of our 2nd place achievement in the Ireland’s Fittest School challenge 2016/2017.
This will kick start our European Week of Sport initiative.
Friday will also be a non uniform day (1 euro) and all classes (including teachers!) will walk the "school mile" to encourage physical activity and to get some fresh air!
This week then leads perfectly into our Irish Life fitness challenge. While we achieved the status of Ireland's second fittest school last year hopefully we can go one better this year.
Mr. Tivnan and Mr.Tuohy will also be giving up all of their lunch breaks Monday - Thursday to facilitate various activities in the gym for the students.
Please encourage students to come and try the press up and plank challenges.
The various subject departments and their teachers will also promote fitness across the school during the week as they will be highlighting the benefits of being active.
We encourage all students and staff alike to make a big effort for this event!
