On Saturday 2nd September, Summerhill College Kayaking Club enjoyed their first session of the academic year on the water. Here students practiced their river rescue skills, with swimmers taking full advantage of the warm water temperature. The Kayak Club are opening up to new beginners this week. They have decided to run the kayaking on Saturdays or Sundays to make it available to the TY students too (who have work experience on a Friday). As a club they are actively searching for members who do not have a focus in another sport. They feel that the benefits of taking up a sport for these individuals is far greater than it would be for a person switching from another sport. On 28th and 29th the Kayak club will have an overnight trip to Clifden for existing members to hone their whitewater skills on the tidal rapid located outside of the town. To find out any more information or if you have an interest in maybe joining the Summerhill Kayak Club this year then please contact Mr.Moore in school.

Our PE teachers Mr.Tuohy and Mr.Tivan were certainly making the most of the sunshine today in what was an extremely busy day for them. Early morning saw them off to Strandhill for the LCA end of year PE outing, with the full class taking to the water for a morning surf session. The afternoon then served up some perfect conditions with a large number of Summerhill Surf Club members in attendance and catching some pretty nice waves. Back at school it was the last PE session ever for the leaving certs, who, over a game of soccer, enjoyed plenty of laughs while they reminisced over their years in Summerhill.

A massive well done to 2nd year student Conor Leonard, who kicked into emergency mode at the weekend when he saw a man collapse outside Higgins pharmacy on Saturday. Conor went to the scene asked if anyone had CPR training. No one had checked for responsiveness breathing or commenced CPR at that stage. An adult trained in CPR who came on the scene took over compressions from Conor. Well done Conor, you were attentive in wellbeing CPR class with the PE department and this life skill certainly helped save this mans life. It just further re-emphasis the importance of being trained in CPR. Well done Conor, the school is very proud of your actions.
