On Thursday April 19, some of our first year Business Studies students got the wonderful opportunity of visiting The Central Bank in Dublin. Once there, the boys got an insight into the workings of the Central Bank; what it does, what it's responsible for and how it's run. This was followed up with a short video which even featured team 'Greenspan' from Summerhill, who won the Generation Euro competition last year! It was then onto looking around the exhibitions which included '75 Years of Change - The Story Of The Central Bank Of Ireland' and 'Pounds, Schillings & Independence'. The trip then continued onto Croke Park with a tour of the stadium which included sitting in the VIP area, getting a birds eye view from the media centre, sneaking a peak inside the dressing rooms and walking in the footsteps of Gaelic games legends as they go pitch-side through the players' tunnel! A great day was had by all.

CanSats are small ‘satellites’ containing all the necessary subsystems found in a real satellite - such as power and communications - that fit into a 330ml soft drink can. Even if they do not actually go into space, they are released from a rocket at an altitude of about 1 kilometer. On their way back to the ground, CanSats have to perform a certain mission and land safely, just like a space probe descending and landing on another planet. CanSat brings together teams of 4-6 students and a teacher to represent their school and country in regionals, nationals and finally, internationals where they will have the opportunity to meet the industry's top scientists in aerospace technology from ESA (European Space Agency) as well as compete against Europes top international teams where a team's chosen missions, data collected, technology, presentation of data, communication and teamwork are all taken into account.

The Board of Management of the College of the Immaculate Conception, Summerhill, Sligo is pleased to announce the appointment of Mr. Kenneth Donagher as an additional Deputy Principal for the college. Mr. Donagher will take up the post in September 2018. The position has been made possible by changes brought about in the 2017 Budget whereby schools with enrolment figures of over 900 students were granted a third Deputy Principal. Deputy Principals assist the Principal in the day to day management of the school. A native of Easkey, Co. Sligo, Kenneth has been a teacher in Summerhill College for nearly three decades. He holds a Bachelor of Technology (Education) degree from Thomond College of Education, and a Master of Education Degree (First Class Honours) from the University of Limerick. During his time in Summerhill Kenneth has been involved in leading several areas of school development and more recently he has had a lead role in developing the ICT infrastructure for the school, as well as being a Year Head. Responding to his appointment Mr. Donagher said: “I am really looking forward to working with the senior management team in this new role. I am committed to making every effort to contribute to the goal that every student has the opportunity to develop their talents to the full in our school.” Welcoming the appointment, The College Principal, Mr Paul Keogh said: “I am delighted to welcome Mr Donagher to the Senior Management Team of the college. He joins Ms. Maura Murphy, Mr. Eoin Moriarty and myself as we continue to work on a daily basis to develop the college as a professional learning community in which academic excellence in a caring environment is to the fore. Mr. Donagher brings with him significant experience as he has been part of the middle management structure of the college for over 12 years. His appointment will have huge benefits for the senior management team and the entire college community.” The Patron of the College, Bishop Kevin Doran, said: “I am very happy to hear that Mr Kenneth Donagher has been appointed by the Board of Management of the College of the Immaculate Conception as Deputy Principal. I want to welcome Kenneth as he joins the senior management team at the College. He brings, in particular, significant technological skills and pastoral care experience to the role. This will be of great assistance to both students and staff into the future.” The Chairperson of the Board of Management, Dr Michael Duignan noted how “the appointment of a third Deputy Principal means, in particular, that as the College grows adequate management provision will be in place to ensure that all students at Summerhill College receive the highest possible academic experience and personalised pastoral care.”

Catholic Schools Week took place from the 28th of January to the 4th of February. To begin the celebration of this week our Transition Year and 5th year students who are completing the Pope John Paul II Awards participated in a Mass in the Cathedral alongside students from the Ursuline College. Throughout the week reflections were read out over the PA system, allowing students to pause and reflect on the role of family, the school and the parish in the living out of faith. Students took part in a number of activities during their Religious Education classes including making posters, St. Brigid's crosses and going to the College chapel. 1st year students invited their grandparents in on Thursday to celebrate a special Mass which highlighted the importance of the grandparents in passing along the faith. This week provided the opportunity for our school community to reflect on what being a Catholic school means to us.
