We were joined by 1st Year students and their parents and guardians, local clergy and the patron of the College, Bishop Kevin Doran. This was a very enjoyable evening with many 1st Year students being actively involved in the Mass acting as Ministers of the Word, altar servers, reading prayers and taking part in the offertory procession and the school choir. Afterwards everyone gathered in the GP area of the College for tea and biscuits. It was a lovely opportunity to chat to other parents and guardians, staff, local clergy and Bishop Doran.

TY Students Elected To Sligo Comhairle Na nÓg Council
Created : 24 Oct 2017, 9:03 PM
Archived : 24 Dec 2017, 12:00 AM
Well done to the Summerhill students who attended the Sligo Comhairle na nÓg AGM held on October 24th in the Radisson Hotel, especially TY students Tom Flanagan, Cormac Beirne, Rian Lück McGowan, Fraiser Gaine and Joseph Shannon who were all elected onto the council.
Comhairle na nÓg are child and youth councils in the 31 local authorities of the country, which give children and young people the opportunity to be involved in the development of local services and policies.
In light of the fact that Comhairle na nÓg is for young people under the age of 18 and who therefore have no other voting mechanism to have their voice heard, Comhairle na nÓg is designed to enable young people to have a voice on the services, policies and issues that affect them in their local area.
Sligo Comhairle are working on an intergenerational project in 2017. They are looking to break down barriers based on stereotypes between the older generation and younger; to share history, music, skills and to form friendships.
They are also working on mental health and well-being. They want to promote positive mental health and well-being through art and music and plan to organise an event or exhibition/competition for young people in County Sligo to promote art and music as ways to express and promote positive mental health.
Congratulations to all involved.

10 TIPS FOR BOOSTING SELF-ESTEEM
1. Remind yourself of the things that you are good at. Everyone has inner strengths.
2. Stop doing things for the sole purpose of receiving praise. See praise as a ‘bonus’ for doing the right things.
3. Some people have very positive conversations about you when you’re not around. Sometimes people forget to affirm you.
4. Do not measure your self-worth by comparing yourself to others. There will always be people who have things which you desire.
5. Stop trying to become someone else. Embrace the wonderful person that you are already. You're one of a kind -a unique being who is on the planet just once.
6. Everyone is imperfect. We all make mistakes. You share this imperfection with everyone else.
7. You have a unique contribution to make to this world. Life is a gift and so are you.
8. Remind yourself that your mood is coloured by the conversations that you have with yourself. Focus on what is right about yourself and your life.
9. Remind yourself of some of your achievements. No one is a total disaster!!
10. Open yourself up socially and engage in many social circles. Investment in numerous friendships leaves you less dependent on a few.

'Just One Life' Programme

During the week all TY and LCA students attended a Road Safety Show hosted by the Sligo Rotary Club which is called "Just One Life".
Students participated in lecture style seminars and information sessions throughout the day with talks given by the RSA, Garda Charlie Jordan from the Road Traffic Dept, the Fire Brigade, Ambulance Service, rally driver Toni Kelly, Dr. Fergal Hickey consultant in emergency medicine from HSE Sligo as well as numerous accident survivors.
After the lectures, students then moved outside where they witnessed the emergency services crews demonstrate the work they do in the event of a car accident. Summerhill were lucky that 2 of our TY boys got the chance to act as the 'victims' trapped in the crashed car while the fire brigade cut the car and dismantled it in order to free them where they where then stretcheted into the awaiting ambulance.
The next day class groups then took it in turns to go down town and participate in the RSA rollover car and simulator.
Many thanks to Sligo Rotary Club and all involved in the organisation and delivery of this fantastic day.
