On Friday 16th of December members of the St. Vincent de Paul arrived to the college to collect all of the food items which had been kindly donated by students, parents and staff to the SVP Christmas Food Appeal. A huge amount of food was gathered, all of which will go to putting food on the tables of families in need in our locality this year. We are extremely grateful to all who generously donated to this very worthy cause. A special thank you goes to Ms Pauline Duffy who co-ordinates the Food Appeal efforts in the school every year and to the students who helped to transport the food from the school to the van.
Our Memory Tree

As part of our November Remembrance masses this year we had a 'memory tree'. Students were invited to write the names of loved ones who have passed away on leaves which they could then place on our memory tree. During the service a candle was lit and a prayer was said for the all of the people whose names were on our tree. On Thursday 15th of December we held a planting ceremony for our memory tree. A number of students who have been bereaved recently were invited to attend the service and to plant our tree as a special way of remembering their dearly departed. Despite the rain it was a poignant few moments which allowed those present to think of their lost loved ones. Afterwards all were invited to have tea, cake and a chat with the school chaplain and the school counsellor. After Christmas the chaplain and school counsellor will offer a bereavement support group service to students who have been bereaved. Our memory tree will serve as a reminder of all dearly departed members of our school community.

Increasing numbers of Irish students are now availing of the opportunities presented by English-taught programmes in the Netherlands, either at the Research Universities (all higher ranked than Trinity) or at the less academic and very employment-focused Universities of Applied Sciences. Selection for these programmes is not based on points. There is generous financial support from the Dutch government and our students can take their SUSI maintenance grants with them. First Year Christmas Service

On Wednesday December 7th all of our first year students gathered in the GP for our annual Christmas Service. It is a school tradition for first years to gather for a short prayer service where the youngest student in the school is invited to place the baby Jesus in the crib and the oldest student in the school is asked to turn on the lights on the school Christmas tree. While this is being done we listen to scripture readings which tell us about the birth of Jesus and how Jesus is the light of the world. We also say prayers for all of our families, friends and those in need this Christmas. Our choir provided some wonderful Christmas carols to add to the festivities. Our youngest student this year, Cillian Duffy, placed the baby Jesus in the crib. Our oldest student, Ronan Anderson, turned on the lights on our Christmas tree. Special thank you goes to our fifth year student council members who said our readings and prayers, our wonderful choir led by Ms Feeney and Mr Whelan, Fr Cryan for leading us in our service, and our youngest and oldest students for joining in our service.

During November our John Paul II Award candidates for this year organised a bucket collection in aid of Concern. On a cold wet day the boys took turns of two hour slots collecting money outside two busy locations in town. The boys returned at the end of the day delighted with how much they had collected. They counted the funds gathered which totaled €405.53. On Wednesday 7th of December Tom Lavin, a local representative from Concern, called to the school to collect the cheque for the funds raised by the John Paul II candidates. Tom, a former pupil of Summerhill, spoke to the boys about his time in the college and also his travels overseas with Concern providing aid to those most in need. He thanked the boys for their hard work in organising the bucket collection and for the vital funds they raised. These funds will be used to help the poorest of the poor in countries where Concern is providing vital aid. Well done to all of the boys involved!

Christmas started today in Summerhill as the LCA students organised a wonderful Christmas carol service for their teachers and first year students. The boys have been busily preparing the school for Christmas over the past few days as they put up the nativity crib and Christmas tree in the GP area. This has been part of their LCA task and the boys would like to thank their teachers and the school choir for their help in making this event a great success. Well done boys.
