This years Connacht Senior Cup Final between Summerhill College Sligo and Rice College from Westport took place in the excellent facility of MileBush Park in Castlebar. The game was played on their astro pitch due to wet conditions deeming the main grass unplayable. The first half saw both teams create lots of chances with saves from their keepers. End to end play with nothing held back by each player. The score line of 0-0 was fair as the whisle blew for half time. Rice college started off strong in the 2nd half and continued to dominate throughout the game. Summerhill had their chances but the Rice keeper handle those with ease. Rice college took the lead with a tap in when the ball rebounded from the Summerhill keepers first save and Rice College held on to it despite Summerhill best efforts to find the equaliser. Rice college lifted the Cup to become this years Connacht Senior Cup winners. Summerhill have a young side and no doubt will be back again next year with most of this years team intact.

TY5 had the opportunity today to visit Sligo Tourist Office as part of their Business module. The students got the chance to meet with Esther and Aoife who explained to them the role of the Tourist Office in Sligo, the services they offer and what the staff do. A great insight was gained on the importance of Sligo along the Wild Atlantic Way. They also got some information for their tourism assignment they are currently working on and found out that Summerhill College is the first attraction on the Sligo Tourist Trail. Many thanks to everybody from the Tourist Office for the great visit.

Shrove or Pancake Tuesday is on February 28th. Shrove Tuesday is the day before the start of Lent on Ash Wednesday. The word “shrove” is the past tense of the English verb “shrive” which means to obtain absolution for one’s sins by way of confession or doing penance. On this day Catholics are encouraged to go to Confessions in preparation for the penitential season. Ash Wednesday is on the 1st of March. Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent. During Lent Christians make a special effort to: 1. Pray 2. Fast 3. Give to charity Each year group in the College will take place in an Ash Wednesday prayer service and will have the opportunity to receive the ashes. Mass will be offered throughout the season of Lent every day at lunch time in the College chapel. All are welcome to come. Confessions will also be offered throughout Lent at lunch time in the College chapel.
