The English Department in conjunction with the renowned actor and lecturer in Drama from Sligo IT, Mr Ciaran McCauley are organising educational workshops in the Factory Theatre this coming week for Summerhill College Junior Cycle students. Summerhill College has a remarkable tradition of past students being involved in contemporary theatre . Many of the founding members of the critically acclaimed Blue Raincoat Theatre Company are from our school. Niall Henry has directed The Playboy of the Western World at the Abbey and Mikel Murphy is one of the most celebrated actors in the country. Ciaran McCauley has performed in remarkable interpretations of Ionescu, Beckett and Yeats. These and many more have a huge reputation which is even greater in the international theatrical community where their work is seen as being part of the vanguard of European theatre. Bringing students to drama productions assist in giving them a more authentic experience of what we mean by the term 'Drama' - to animate a text and understand the process involved. Members of the Summerhill College English Department have been in discussions with Ciaran McCauley about the possibility of production that would address these needs. This week sees these months of planning and preparation become a reality as all of our Junior Cycle students will go to the Factory performance space to see a production that has been specifically devised for Summerhill College students to give them an insight into the the mechanisms of modern theatre. This marks an exciting new strand and development for Summerhill and will offer students an experience of high quality contemporary theatre whilst offering an understanding of the issues that must be addressed in production-costume,lighting, sets etc. It will be a performance based exploration of the history and meaning of the term Drama. Further queries can be made to Mr Brennan through the office 0719160311 or email - info@summerhillcollege.ie. Well done to all involved and thank you to Ciaran McAuley and the staff of the Factory Theatre for their help and assistance.
