TY Student Luke Hamilton Wins Microsoft Office Specialist National Finals

A massive congratulations to Luke Hamilton and Conor Curley who both competed on Wednesday 10th May in the national finals of the Certiport Microsoft Office Exams. They were part of a small group of 60 finalists competing, 20 for Microsoft Word, 20 for Excel and 20 for PowerPoint. There were over 20,000 students who took part in this competition nationally, This is a great achievement for Summerhill to have two students from the same school and we were the only school with 2 students in the same category. Luke was the overall outright winner in his competition in Microsoft Word so he is now going to get an all expenses paid trip to England to represent Ireland at the 4 Nations Challenge next month. Well done Luke and the very best of luck in the next round of the competition!
Welcome for Second Deputy Principal at Summerhill College

The Board of Management of the College of the Immaculate Conception, Summerhill, Sligo has announced the appointment of Mr Eoin Moriarty as a second Deputy Principal for the College. Mr Moriarty will take up the post at the beginning of September 2017. The position has been made possible by changes brought about in the 2017 Budget whereby schools with enrolment figures of over 700 students were granted a second Deputy Principal. Deputy Principals assist the Principal in the day to day management of the school. Originally from Sligo and a past pupil of the college, Eoin has worked in Ballakermeen High School in the Isle of Man for the last fifteen years as a teacher of English and History as well as working as an Assistant Head teacher for the last four years. He has a Bachelor of Arts (English and History) and Higher Diploma in Education from NUI Galway. He has been involved in and led several areas of School Development Planning and has had a lead role in curriculum development and management. Responding to his appointment Mr Moriarty said: “I am honoured to be appointed to the post of Deputy Principal at Summerhill College and delighted to be returning home after 15 years in the Isle of Man. I was working in a fully comprehensive school of over 1500 students and have gained a wide variety and range of experience. As a past pupil of Summerhill I am familiar with its history, tradition ethos and am keenly aware of the importance of the College to the young men of Sligo and how it positively shapes their future. I look forward to working with the senior management team, staff, students and parents to continue to provide excellence in education.” Welcoming the appointment, The College Principal, Mr Paul Keogh said: “I want to welcome Mr Moriarty as he joins the senior management team alongside Ms Maura Murphy and myself. Mr Moriarty brings with him significant experience as both a teacher and leader in education and his appointment will have huge benefits for the entire college community.” The Patron of the College, Bishop Kevin Doran, said: “I am very happy to hear that Mr Eoin Moriarty has been appointed by the Board of the College of the Immaculate Conception as Deputy Principal. I want to welcome Eoin as he joins the senior management team at the College. He brings in particular international experience to the role that will be of great assistance to both students and staff in to the future.” The Chairperson of the Board of Management of Summerhill, Dr Michael Duignan noted how “the appointment of Mr Moriarty as Deputy Principal marks another significant milestone in the development of the College.”
TY Business Class Visits Sligo Tourist Office

Today some of the TY's got to visit Sligo Tourist Office as part of their tourism module in Business class. We met with Aoife who explained to the students the importance of the Sligo Tourist Office, the job that they do there and how the tourism sector plays a major part in the business industry in Ireland. A massive thanks to all the staff in the office especially Aoife for accommodating us once again!
LCA Car Wash

The LCA class recently held a very successful car wash as part of their enterprise module. The boys worked hard all afternoon on Monday a scrubbing and washing teachers car on the tennis courts. Great fun was had by all and it was made all the more enjoyable by the sunny weather. Many thanks to all the staff who supported this task.
Summerhill Celebrates Europe Day

Today saw Summerhill's TY and LCA classes celebrate Europe Day by raising the EU flag outside the school and creating a wall display. Europe Day, held on 9 May every year, celebrates peace and unity in Europe. The date marks the anniversary of the historical 'Schuman declaration'. At a speech in Paris in 1950, Robert Schuman, the then French foreign minister, set out his idea for a new form of political cooperation in Europe, which would make war between Europe's nations unthinkable. His vision was to create a European institution that would pool and manage coal and steel production. A treaty creating such a body was signed just under a year later. Schuman's proposal is considered to be the beginning of what is now the European Union. Happy Europe Day!
Cian Harrison selected to represent Ireland

"Champion Of Liberty" Exhibition

An exhibition celebrating the life story of William Bourke Cockran, Sligo's forgotten Statesman,will take place in City Hall, Quay Street Sligo from 5th-26th May between 11am-4.30pm, Monday to Friday. William Bourke Cockran is a former student of Summerhill College and was a US Representative from New York and a political orator. He advocated the repeal of the Fifteenth Amendment to the US Constitution, which forbade states from preventing US citizens from voting on account of 'race' or 'colour'. Past Pupil Macdara Tinney Becomes a Member of TCD's Scholars

A massive congratulations to Macdara Tinney who recently became a member of TCD's Scholars. Scholars are selected on the basis of a special examination and students must show exceptional commitment, discipline and motivation if they are to display sufficient merit to be elected to the position of Scholar. This is an outstanding achievement for Macdara and we wish him continued success in his studies in TCD.
