Updated HSE guidance on close contacts in schools
Created : 23 Sep 2021, 6:32 PM
Archived : 23 Nov 2021, 12:00 AM
Dear parents and guardians
I am sharing with you all the guidance I received today from the HSE in relation to any cases of Covid 19 in schools. I have summarised the document below and the full document is attached for you to read.
• From Monday September 27th 2021. A positive case of Covid 19 in the school will not require any contact tracing. Principals are no longer permitted to contact the HSE and they will not contact us unless the case is in a Special Education setting. (This means our ASD Classes)
• If a child is identified as a close contact in a school setting they only need to self isolate for 5 days and have one Covid test.
• Children who are asymptomatic in a classroom setting do not need to restrict their movements.
• If a child is deemed a household close contact-they still need to restrict their movements. HSE will advise on this.
• If a child is showing any symptoms consistent with Covid 19, they must not attend school.
• Any child who is currently identified as a close contact through school or another case that is not their house can return to school provided that they have no symptoms of Covid-19 from Monday 27th September. They do not need to present for COVID 19 testing before returning.
• The list of symptoms as per the guidance is available here. If your child attends school with any of these symptoms we are required to send them home. I ask all parents to refamiliarise themselves with this list, or reference it at any time if you are unsure.
• All of our current mitigation and infection control measures must remain in place. Including pods, bubbles, etc.
These rules come into effect from Monday 27 September.
Kind regards
Bryan Lynch

Death of a pupil

Dear Parent/Guardian
The school has experienced the sudden death of Lucy O’Reilly Fleming a pupil in 6th class.
We are deeply saddened by her death. Our thoughts are with the O’Reilly Fleming family.
We have support structures in place to help your child cope with this tragedy. Our NEPs psychologist is working with us to assist us to support the pupils, our Critical Incident Management team is liaising with all relevant parties and coordinating the supports needed and we have sought advice from the parish team.
It is possible that your child may have some feelings and questions s/he may like to discuss with you. It is important to give factual information that is age appropriate.
You can help your child by taking time to listen and by encouraging him/her to express feelings. All children are different and will express their feelings in different ways. It is not uncommon for children to have difficulty concentrating or be fearful, anxious, or irritable. They may become withdrawn, cry, complain of physical aches and pains, have difficulty sleeping or have nightmares. Some may not want to eat. These are generally short term reactions. Over the course of the coming days, please keep an eye on your child and allow him/her to express their feelings without criticism.
Although classes will continue as usual, I anticipate that the next few days will be difficult for everyone.
We have enclosed some information which you may find useful in helping your child through this difficult time.
Young people frequently turn to social media to see what others are saying, or to find out more. At these times it is important that you monitor their use and engage with them about what they read. We urge you to emphasise and reinforce the need to be extremely sensitive and careful about what they post.
If you would like advice you may contact the school office at 045-431179 and a member of staff will contact you as soon as possible.
Yours sincerely,
Bryan Lynch
