Silver birch ( Beith gheal). At this time of year look for the female catkins on this tree. These contain thousands of seeds each with a pair of wings to aid dispersal by the wind. Small seed-eating birds such as siskins and redpolls eat these seeds. Because it produces so many seeds, the birch is called a pioneer species. It will be one of the first trees to colonise ground that has been cleared. The silver birch is a symbol of purity and new life because of its bright bark. Its twiggy branches are used to make brooms and steeplechase fences. Because it is such an elegant tree it is called "The Lady of the Woods".

Ash ( Fuinseóg). The black, hard leaf buds of common ash are among the last to open. Its leaves are among the first to fall because they can't tolerate frost. In spring the female, spiky flowers display their stigmas to catch wind-blown pollen from male flowers which are purple. If pollination occurs dry fruits called samaras are formed. The wind disperses these. Each fruit contains one oval seed in the centre if the samara. The fruits form in bunches and are called keys because they resemble a medieval bunch of keys. To propagate the seeds, place the keys in sand for eighteen months and then sow them in March or April in neutral soil.

Scots Pine
Scots pine ( Giúis). An evergreen conifer, native to Ireland. It colonised the country about 12,000 years ago. Thought, however, to have become extinct about 1,500 years ago because of wetter climatic conditions. This theory recently disproved by Trinity College scientists who found descendants of the original pines growing in Co. Clare. In the 17th century new Scots pine trees were introduced to Ireland from Scotland, hence the name. The native red squirrel eats the seeds of pine cones. There is a case for growing more of these trees to conserve this species. Pines can live for 700 years. They produce red deal. An impressive sight is O'Connor's Scots pine wood in Tuckmilltown. That wood is depicted on the OS maps of 1838. Back then it extended much further towards the N7. Photo credit of wood: Geraldine James. In the second picture you can see a Scots Pine cone after a red squirrel ate the seeds!
