Alder( Fearnóg). In spring alders produced male and female catkins that were pollinated by wind. The female catkins have now changed into brownish- black, cone- like fruits which bear tiny seeds that can float in water. Alders like wet places. Traditionally, alder was used to make shields. It was considered as the tree of war and death because the wood changes to a reddish colour after it is cut. It was used for making clogs, charcoal and sluice gates. Ferns in Wexford, Ferney in Fermanagh and Ballyfarnon in Roscommon are named after the alder. Above: Ripening alder cones. Photo credits: Eamon Ó Murchú. Male and female alder catkins in spring. Native Irish Trees: Spindle Tree (Feoras in Irish) Getting to know fruits of autumn in the locality. This is a small tree that grows to 3-6m in height. Remains unnoticed for most of the year until now when its oval leaves turn a reddish-orange and it produces its striking bright pink fruits containing hard, orange seeds. These are white within the orange coatings. The fruit consists of four capsules each containing a seed. Its hard wood was used for making spindles, hence its name. It was also used for making artists' charcoal. All parts are poisonous to humans. However, mice and foxes will eat the fruits.

It can take up to 14 days for symptoms to show. They can be similar to symptoms of cold and flu. Getting an early diagnosis means, you can get the help you need and take steps to avoid spreading the virus, if you have it. For the complete list of symptoms, please refer to the HSE Website. Last week was Maths Week in St. Conleth & Mary’s! We had a very busy week with all our activities. Congratulations to all the students who took part in the Maths Eyes’ competition. The students took lots of lovely pictures of maths in the world around us. We looked at insect symmetry, completed pictures of insects and designed them. Some classes watched a maths show on MathsWeekTV and took part in a quiz on-line. We enjoyed discussing and solving lots of puzzles. Some students created maths diaries. Well done to everyone on a great maths week!
