Junior Achievement Ireland www.jai.ie organised ‘A conversation with your MEP 2022’ - A Communicating Europe Event for Second Level TY students for schools based in Waterford – Munster Constituency. We were delighted to take part in this event. ‘Communicating Europe’ initiative is supported by the Department of Foreign affairs and Trade. This event is part of a national series of events run in October/November where approximately 1,000 students from Second Level Schools throughout Ireland, 6 MEP’s and schools participate. How it worked: The session ran from St. Angela’ Secondary school in Waterford where our TY students and other schools logged on virtually for a one hour session. We were connected with Grace O’Sullivan MEP and also TY students from the other schools across Waterford City & County. Grace told us about her education and career path, how she became an MEP, her role as an MEP, the advantages of being part of the EU and then it was handed over to the students to ask her their questions! Well done to Grace Moloney, Eoghan O Brien, Daniel O Connor and Evan Drohan for asking very relevant questions. This event was enjoyed by our TY students.

The competition is open to students aged 14-18. Students should submit a 5-minute or 600-word speech on one of the following topics: · Current efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and adapt are not enough to tackle the speed and scale of climate change, meaning that some losses and damages from climate change are inevitable. Women and children in particular on the front line. Rich countries should pay their fair share for the loss and damage their energy consumption has caused in poorer nations. · Care, both paid and unpaid, while largely a burden for women, is the responsibility of everyone in society and there should be a human right to care. Discuss. · Education is a right for all children. Beyond aid and charity, what are the ways that the Irish government could support children accessing education (for example through tax structures, debt and economic policies) Now in its 9th year, the competition is a great opportunity for students to research global issues, take action on important human rights issues and to improve and hone their writing skills. We hope that this year’s competition will be of interest to you and your students. To enter, email your submissions to me at comms.ireland@actionaid.org. The deadline is Friday 13th January 2023. Prizes and final · 15 regional finalists will be invited to submit a video of themselves reading their speeches. · 6 finalists will then be chosen to go forward to the national final, each winning a €50 OneforAll voucher and will go forward to the national stage. · The finalists will be invited to attend a final in Dublin in March 2023. · One overall winner will receive a €500 OneforAll voucher and their teacher will receive a €100 OneforAll voucher. Please also ask your student to fill out our very brief survey, which you can find here, www.surveymonkey.com/r/359KJRN. Only students who fill out the survey will be considered for the final. Best of luck.
