St.Macartan’s College, Monaghan’s Grade “A” GAA Nursery.
History & Ethos
Gaelic games in St.Macartan’s have never been stronger. The College has 20 teachers actively involved in coaching Football, Hurling and Handball to the highest level in partnership with Monaghan GAA coaching and development. We strive to achieve a club like environment for our students and our “ Mo Chlub Eile” initiate has enhanced the sense of belonging and community that we pride ourselves in. Monaghan county teams typically are made from between one third and one half graduates from our school. 2018 All-Stars Rory Beggan and Karl O’Connell are among many distinguished current Monaghan players who are “Sem” alumni. This decade has seen silverware in Ulster Colleges blue riband “A” grade football with Corn na nÓg and Brock cup success in Junior school while the Rannafast and MacCormack cups have been won at Senior grade. The school has a long and distinguished history in the promotion of handball and Ulster and All-Ireland success are regular occurrences as witnessed by senior student Eoghan McGinnity’s All-Ireland minor 40x20 success in the past fortnight.
While success is always welcome the development and nurturing of talent in the forge of “A” grade competition is consistently what this standard bearing GAA nursery is all about. The challenge to develop to your potential and compete against the very best in Ulster is an eternal motivation while there is no doubt that the development of state of the art playing and training facilities in recent years has been a real game changer in terms of providing a level playing field to achieve optimum development.
Sem GAA Academy
The Sem GAA Academy takes place every May and is an opportunity that is open to all our incoming 1st years. The Academy gives our new recruits a taste of the facilities, coaching expertise and culture of Gaelic Football that exists in St. Macartan’s.
The Sem GAA Academy is also a great chance for our new Sem boys to meet and train with lads from other schools and other clubs and finally it facilitates our coaches to assess the footballing talent of our incoming students which aids in the selection of the recipients of the four annual Mohan Family GAA Bursaries.
1st Year League
The St. Macartan’s 1st Year Gaelic Football League is one of the great annual traditions within our school. Played on the ‘Junior Pitch’, the competition takes place throughout September and October. The league serves as an opportunity for our students to make new friends from other schools, other clubs and other classes. It is also a chance for our 1st years to showcase their footballing talent before their new school community and it would not be unusual to have in excess of 200 students watching the games on any given day. Following each game, a ‘Play of the Day’ Certificate is awarded to a player that displays the most eye-catching skill in that particular match. In 2018, 72 of our 1st years participated in the league which helps to orientate and settle many of our students into “Sem” life. Well-being is a central tenet of all new Junior cycle programmes and gaelic games participation is complementary to the positive development for many of our students.
S&C
Since the end of October, the players have undertaken a lunchtime strength and conditioning program. The emphasis of this program is the long term development of our players and the 1st year program seeks to build the foundations for future athletic improvement. The focus is very much on establishing good technique and fostering a culture where the players can independently prevent injury whilst making them aware of
the possibility to improve their long-term speed, power and strength.
Healthy-eating Initiative
Another aspect of the well-being nature of our 1st year GAA program has been the promotion of healthy eating amongst our players. Our players have been educated on the importance of nutrition to supplement their training and lifestyle. Players have been informed on what and when they should be eating. Every Tuesday, the Dalton players meet to have their lunch along with their coaches. This serves as a great opportunity for our coaches and players to discuss and showcase the improvements they have made to their diets. In addition to this, every Friday, the Dalton panel eat collectively in the school canteen. As well as being an enjoyable social opportunity for the players, it also gives the students a chance to try a variety of new dishes expertly prepared by the canteen staff which provide an excellent energy source ahead of Friday’s after-school training.
Future
We currently have 55 first years in competition or actively preparing for it. Our 1st years are this year coached by Mark Duffy, David McCague, Niall Lee, Paul West and Rory Beggan from Monaghan Games & Development. Gaelic games are part of the heartbeat of our school and facilitate the healthy personal, cultural and physical development of many of our students and while Monaghan strives for “Sam Maguire” our dream is that the MacRory Cup will return for a 10th time to Monaghan!

Transition year History trip to Krakow, Poland.

On Tuesday last, 36 Transition Year students from St. Macartan’s College travelled to the beautiful Polish city of Krakow for a week long History trip, the second educational trip available to Sem TYs this year.
A busy schedule began with a visit to Auschwitz-Birkenau Concentration and Extermination Camps. In what was a truly sobering experience, students had the opportunity to experience the harsh realities of life for all those who were imprisoned there during WW2, enriching their Junior Certificate History studies.
Led by a local tour guide and their four intrepid teachers, the boys then ambled through the streets of Krakow, absorbing its rich history and sampling some of its finest cuisine and culture, from eating zapiekanka to perusing walking sticks in the quaint markets!
A tour 160 metres into the depths of the city’s salt mines began the second day’s adventures, as students and teachers alike were dazzled by the intricate hand carved chapel, and exhilarated by the ‘vintage’ lift ride back to the surface!
A further exploration of the city’s Jewish Quarter, Kazimierz, including some pit stops at the settings of Steven Spielberg’s epic ‘Schindler’s List’, as well as a trip to the local waterpark left the lads longing for their leaba at the end of an action packed day two!
The final day of the tour commenced in much the same fashion as the first, with an intimate Q&A with a local Holocaust survivor, Maria, who lost 54 relatives in the Holocaust. This incredibly tough woman outlined what life was like for a five year old and her family in Auschwitz at this time and explained how important she considered it that history is never allowed repeat itself. She finished by admitting how she has long since forgiven her captors - an inspirational message for us all.
This wonderfully enjoyable and educational trip was rounded off perfectly with a visit to the Oskar Schindler Museum where students were educated about the man who saved the lives of around 1,100 Jewish people during the Holocaust by employing them in his factory.
Poignant moments and moments of laughter were enjoyed in equal measure by all on the trip, with everyone agreeing how worthwhile an excursion it was. This was definitely a week never to be forgotten!
