St. Macartan’s College teachers off to South Africa on Mellon Educate Teaching Programme. St. Macartan’s College Deputy Principal Marion McDonald and incoming Deputy Principal Catherine Mulhern will join teachers from throughout Ireland and the UK in a novel education programme in South Africa in August. The programme is part of the Mellon Educate initiative, an Irish-based, African development charity founded by developer & philanthropist Niall Mellon and originally known as the “Niall Mellon Township Trust”.  Since its foundation and supported by volunteers from throughout Ireland who fundraised and travelled to South Africa and Kenya the Niall Mellon Township Trust has built over 25,000 homes for some 125,000 people in South Africa alone In 2013 the Mellon Trust launched  a 10-year education development programme to provide better education opportunities to more than 100,000 African children. Mellon Educate has to date seen volunteers - including some from the Monaghan area, travel to South Africa to rebuild and renovate schools including one to  pay tribute to the late President Nelson Mandela,  in his Eastern Cape homelands of Mthatha, Qunu. To support teachers in these schools, qualified teachers from the UK and Ireland  and supported by Mellon Educate travel each summer to Cape Town South Africa to work alongside local teachers  in the townships.  St. Macartan's teachers Marion McDonald and Catherine Mulhern  are going to work with teachers in Usasazo High School in the Khayelitsha township. Their work will include working alongside teachers in their classrooms, supporting the teacher in a variety of tasks, share experience and mentoring good practice, sharing planning notes and teaching material and staying in touch thereafter with the teacher that the Monaghan teachers  were partnered with in South Africa. Both teachers will fund their own travel and accommodation costs for the South African trip, however to help support the Mellon Educate programme, Marion and Catherine are organising a cake sale and raffle this morning Saturday from 10.00 am in Monaghan Shopping Centre. Please support.
