St. Macartan's College, Parents' Association to host Internet Safety Workshop
Keeping on top of what teenagers and children are doing online can be difficult. But with the popularity of social media, YouTube and other online and gaming, it’s an important area of young peoples' lives that parents and guardians must be aware of and involved in.
In their study "Net Children Go Mobile" ,published in 2015, O’Neill and Dinh, report that one in five 9 to 16 year olds in Ireland or 20% say that they have been bothered by something on the internet in the past year, 13% of 13 to 14 year olds say that they have been bullied on a social networking site while one in five 9 to 16 year olds (22%) have had contact online with people they have never met face to face.
With this and other concerns regarding social media in mind, the St. Macartan's College Parents' association have engaged REIM Training Solutions to present a workshop to parents and guardians on this important topic. REIM are specialist internet safety advisors who teach children of all ages and parents how to stay safe online. They have been invited to St. Macartan's College on December 1st to speak with parents about issues that parents should be aware of regarding internet safety. The presentation will begin at 7.00 pm in the College Theatre and will be followed by the Parents’ Association AGM.
REIM Training Solutions will give practical tips and measures to help keep children safe online and bring parents' attention to particular areas which may be of concern.
This promises to be a worthwhile and informative evening for parents / guardians / grandparents with all welcome attend this free workshop.

St.Macartan’s College V St.Patrick’s College Cavan
13th October 2016
A warm autumn's morning in October was when the Corn Na nÓg squad from The Sem would kick off this season's campaign. The first challenge that the team had to overcome was that of St.Pat’s Cavan who had a strong Dalton Cup campaign the previous year when they reached the Semi-Final. The venue was “The Peace Link” in Clones,Co.Monaghan and the playing conditions were impeccable. Both teams were prepared and enthusiastic to begin the new season and at 11:30 the referee blew the whistle and the game was underway. St.Pats won the throw-up and this was unfortunate for The Sem as straight away the opposing team ran upfield and scored to hold a one goal advantage within the first minute of play. Thirty seconds later a poor pass was intercepted by the St.Pat’s forward and he finished to put the away team two goals up within a matter of seconds. So early in the game it looked like The Sem had a mountain to climb but the match had only begun. As the Sem began to find their feet some good play by Tiarnan Kierans lead to St.Pats giving away a free kick which was converted by Tiarnan O’Rourke and with their first score on the board they were hungry for more. For the next 10 minutes The Sem would control the game for the next 10 minutes with a point coming from Killian McKenna after a short 45 to reduce the deficit to 4 points. Sem keeper Nathan Lavery made a few good saves to keep St.Pat’s at bay, but it wouldn't last with the opposition forwards continuously finding pockets of space and exploiting the Sem defense. Another two goals would be scored by St.Pat’s which would increase their lead and make it a very difficult task to overcome. Some unfortunately placed passes resulted in frees being given away and being converted by St.Pat’s. At Half-Time the scoreline was in St.Pats favour with a 14 point lead. During Half-Time, the Sem boys had a chance to re-focus and get their minds set on the Second-Half. St.Macartan's came firing out of the starting blocks in the Second-Half, and six minutes in, some skill by Tiarnan Kierans lead to him being fouled inside the area and the referee awarded a penalty. It was set upon Killian McKenna to finish the penalty and he did so, coolly slotting the ball home into the bottom left corner. The Sem began to find their feet with Tiarnan Kierans winning a free that was converted by Tiarnan O’Rourke. In the 41st minute, Josh Hagan was introduced as a substitute. St.Pats continued to attack but chances were limited due to some good defending. In the 51st minute, a Dylan Ballentine point lead to a poor kickout by the St.Pats keeper which was given away to Josh Hagan who finished it by lobbing the ball over the keeper's head just out of his reach. Further scores by Darragh Murray and Tiernan Kierans reduced the deficit, but it wasn't enough. As the referee blew the final whistle it was a defeat for St.Macartan's on a scoreline of 4:11 to 2:7.

St. Macartan’s College Win All Ireland Law Team Title.
The prestigious National Law Team Competition is organised on an annual basis by Public Access to Law and Supported by the Court Service of Ireland. This competition sees schools from all over Ireland participate in mock criminal trials with students playing the roles of barristers, solicitors witnesses and jury members.
After work at school level whereby students are introduced to the intricacies of Irish law, the St. Macartan’s boys took part in the first round event which was held at the Criminal Courts of Justice in Dublin on Saturday April 17th.
As part of the National competition students used legal theory and analytical reasoning to develop complex legal facts into coherent legal arguments. Under the guidance and mentorship of St. Macartan’s College staff member Mr. Conor McGuigan this law competition allowed students to develop their critical thinking skills and acquire excellent public speaking skills through their respective roles.
Having won all three rounds of the preliminary national competition, St. Macartan’s College progressed to the All Ireland Finals on Saturday 23rd April 2016 where they successfully prosecuted in the semi final and in the final defended the fictitious case of DPP versus Pat Parker. The final result saw St. Macartan’s crowned national Mock Trial Champions for 2016 and presented with the Justice Paul Hill Memorial Cup. The Harry Hill Master of the High Court Memorial Cup was presented to Niall Crawley for his individual performance on the day.
As All Ireland Champions, St. Macartan’s College Law Team now progress to the Empire Law World Championship finals which will take place in New York City in October. This will be the third time that the school was represented in this international event having previously competed in 2010 and 2013 with the St. Macartan’s team then mentored by Mr. Paul MacCormack Castleblayney.
