November we Remember

Ní imithe uainn atá siad, ach imithe romhainn. They are not gone from us, but gone before us. November is a time for remembering and praying for our loved ones who have gone before us and whose loss we feel. It is a time when we are particularly conscious of those in our school who are grieving and all those families who have lost loved ones in the past year. More than most years, this November will be especially poignant as we remember all those who have died during the COVID-19 pandemic. Many thanks to Mr Keane and the TYs for organising a Remembrance Tree in St Monica’s Church. Thanks also to Ms McGrath and the TYs for decorating the tree and for placing a display outside the door of the church. Our school community are invited to take one of the tags in the basket next to the tree and write the names of those they want remembered during Masses held in November. Every Tuesday at 1.40pm the Chaplet of the Holy Souls is prayed in the church. All are welcome.

Women in STEM

Today 5 of our TY girls attended a STEM event The event featured female doctors, nurses and scientists who told their stories about their career paths and how they got into the field of STEM. They discussed hurdles they faced as women in the field and answered student questions relating to the same. The event is part of a larger Science Week festival is run by RCSI this week regarding gender bias in healthcare and research. As you may be aware, there is a long history of gender biases in medicine with women often being seen as hysterical or vulnerable, leading to their exclusion from medical research. This can result in delayed diagnosis and even misdiagnosis of disease in women and a lack of understanding across the board from doctors, researchers, patients and the public. The event, was exclusively online due to Covid-19, and aims to examine perceptions about women’s healthcare and how we could go about making improvements. Participants engaged on a variety of topics such as historical perspectives, gender bias in medicine, and medical issues affecting women today including endometriosis, access to reproductive healthcare and mental health. Well done to Roisín, Ava, Katie,Emma and Tara for attending.

Luan 8ú Samhain Thug na daltaí go léir ón idirbhliain cúirt ar an phictiúrlann inniu chun féachaint ar an scannán "Arracht", an fadscannán as Gaeilge is déanaí. Dráma dorcha suite i gConamara le linn an Drochshaoil atá sa scannán sin agus thaitin sé go mór leis na daltaí. Thaitin an gráin rósta leo chomh maith! Monday 8 November TY students were treated to a cinema outing to see the Irish language drama "Arracht". This dark tale set in Conemara in famine times is the first Irish language feature film to be released in some time and is being hotly tipped for an Oscar nomination in the Best film in a foreign language category. For many of our Friary students it was their first cinema outing since pre covid times so there was great excitement as the students supplied themselves with popcorn and soft drinks to enjoy during the screening! The film went down very well with students and we look forward to the next cinema outing.
