Aware Life Skills for Schools is an educational programme designed to help young people learn new ways to deal with challenges in life. The programme uses an approach based on the principles of cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) which focuses on thinking and behaviour.
The programme contains eight modules delivered over four weeks in 75 minute sessions. This gives students time to reflect on the key learning point each week and time to experiment with the ‘new ways of thinking’ presented. The weekly schedule also allows time for students to raise any questions they might have with their programme instructor.
31 of our TY students started this programme today with Eileen Kennedy.
This programme will help students to:
Understand the interaction between thoughts, feelings and behaviour.
Recognise unhelpful thinking styles and learn how they might change them.
Build inner confidence and foster positive thinking.
Learn how to manage anger and irritability.
Identify unhelpful behaviours and learn how to make small, practical changes.
Understand how to break a problem down into manageable steps, make a plan and put it into action.
Improve wellbeing by making small, easy changes to their lifestyles.
Students that complete the 4 week programme will be awarded a certificate. Best of luck.

Ní imithe uainn atá siad, ach imithe romhainn.
They are not gone from us, but gone before us.
November is a time for remembering and praying for our loved ones who have gone before us and whose loss we feel. It is a time when we are particularly conscious of those in our school who are grieving and all those families who have lost loved ones in the past year. More than most years, this November will be especially poignant as we remember all those who have died during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Many thanks to Mr Keane and the TYs for organising a Remembrance Tree in St Monica’s Church. Thanks also to Ms McGrath and the TYs for decorating the tree and for placing a display outside the door of the church.
Our school community are invited to take one of the tags in the basket next to the tree and write the names of those they want remembered during Masses held in November.
Every Tuesday at 1.40pm the Chaplet of the Holy Souls is prayed in the church. All are welcome.

Today 5 of our TY girls attended a STEM event The event featured female doctors, nurses and scientists who told their stories about their career paths and how they got into the field of STEM. They discussed hurdles they faced as women in the field and answered student questions relating to the same.
The event is part of a larger Science Week festival is run by RCSI this week regarding gender bias in healthcare and research. As you may be aware, there is a long history of gender biases in medicine with women often being seen as hysterical or vulnerable, leading to their exclusion from medical research. This can result in delayed diagnosis and even misdiagnosis of disease in women and a lack of understanding across the board from doctors, researchers, patients and the public. The event, was exclusively online due to Covid-19, and aims to examine perceptions about women’s healthcare and how we could go about making improvements. Participants engaged on a variety of topics such as historical perspectives, gender bias in medicine, and medical issues affecting women today including endometriosis, access to reproductive healthcare and mental health. Well done to Roisín, Ava, Katie,Emma and Tara for attending.
