‘2022 European Year of Youth – Putting young people in the spotlight’. Today two of our TY classes joined this online event. The panel of speakers were Maria Walsh, MEP for Midlands Northwest, Lorraine Gilligan, Executive Director of Léargas, National Coordinator of the European Year of Youth, and Harry McCann, Founder, Digital Youth Council. It was an interesting and informative session. Europe needs the vision, engagement & participation of all young people to build a better future, & Europe needs to give young people opportunities for the future, a future that is greener, more digital & inclusive.

Billy Murphy - Young Offenders !!!!!

Shane Casey is an Irish actor and playwright. He is best known for playing the role of Billy Murphy in The Young Offenders. Shane delivers workshops on motivation, with a subtext of mental health. He spoke to all our TY students today about resilience. Shane was an early school leaver, so he talked to them about the choices he made, and even the wrong turns he took. Shane reckons Ireland has come a long way in ending the cultural stigma attached to mental health. But it’s also vitally important for young people to know that it doesn’t have to be a big issue to go to a counsellor or a mental health practitioner. If you have a pain in your tooth, you might go to the dentist – but you might also go to the dentist if you want a proper clean. So mental health doesn’t have to be a taboo. We can just go in and have a chat.” The students really enjoyed this thought provoking workshop and of course took lots of selfies with Shane.
