Road Safety with Garda Gráinne O Shea

Today we were delighted to welcome Garda Gráinne O Shea into our TY students. Gráinne is a member of An Garda Síochána attached to the Divisional Roads Policing Unit in Waterford city. She delivered a student lead interactive course on all aspects of Road Safety to TYs present in school today. Garda Gráinne covered how collisions can occur, the effect collisions have on people, the ramifications on a person’s life etc. This got students thinking about Road Safety, they came up with questions all of which Garda Gráinne fielded. Students gained an awareness of the legal aspects and the procedures if they are stopped by the Gardaí or involved in a traffic collision. Garda Gráinne discussed getting a driving licence and the importance of insurance. Unfortunately fatalities last year increased and education is key, today we got conversations started, TY students were talking and thinking about road safety hopefully this will make a difference to them in the future. The highlight of the two hour discussion was when students had the opportunity to blow into the drink drager the device that is used by the Gardaí at a checkpoint to test for alcohol. Finally Garda Gráinne spoke to the students about a career in An Garda Síochána and all the different aspects of the job. Very important life skills were imparted to students today.

From the Waterford Education Center We have organised two Webinars for Parents which we would appreciate if you could circulate this information when convenient for you. 1. WEBINAR: Help My Child with Dyspraxia/DCA for families of children with Dyspraxia/DCA – Monday, 16th January 2023 from 6 p.m. – 7 p.m. This webinar looks to provide families of children with Dyspraxia/DCD with strategies and suggestions on areas in which they can help their child at home. This webinar aims to cover areas such as the uniqueness of each child with Dyspraxia/DCD, helping your child find their niche, working on functional life skills, strategies for organisational and planning and helping your child day to day. Facilitator: Stephen Hodnett, Qualified Occupational Therapist and Primary Teacher This is the Register in Advance Link to obtain the Zoom Link to attend the webinar zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_uqWNJWTNSuKX5v812WJH3Q 2. WEBINAR: UNLOCKING YOUR FUTURE CAREER OPTIONS: A CHALLENGED-BASED CAREER GUIDANCE WORKSHOP – Tuesday, 24th January 2023 from 7 p.m. – 8.30 p.m. Rather than relying on the age-old question of ‘what do you want to be’, challenge-based career guidance asks the question ‘what challenges in the world do you want to solve?’ and ‘what do you need to learn to do it?’ A timely workshop webinar, given the looming CAO deadline, Fidelma shows how using a set of career challenge cards and skill-based cards is an invaluable resource and an exciting and practical approach, which can tap into the student’s core motivation and values. Join us and see for yourself as the challenge and skill cards help students realise exciting careers areas that interest them, opening up new pathways that they may not have considered heretofore. Facilitator: Dr. Fidelma Healy Eames, PhD, MSc(Ed), BEd This is the Register in Advance Link in order to obtain the Zoom Link to attend the webinar zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_i4nWYIKBQw-ufA9wuRf4fQ Thank you.
