Huge congratulations to TY student Aoife Butler she is one of eight lucky TY students in Ireland to be offered the opportunity of a lifetime to have an ‘out of this world’ experience at NASA’s ‘Space Camp’ in Huntsville, Alabama! The chosen eight of which our TY student Aoife is one will travel to the USA to experience astronaut training techniques adapted from NASA and ESA’s astronaut training programme, with the whole experience recorded for a brand new RTÉ series. Last October Ms McGann sent an email to all TY students and their parents notifying them of this amazing competition. Aoife entered it, she created a fantastic video which she recorded at night from the top of Cruachan Hill. This hill has two advantages, being close to the coast in the south and to the Comeragh Mountains in the north. The summit, on a clear day, affords a breathtaking 360 degree view of the coast from Youghal to Tramore, the Knockmealdowns to the north-west and the Comeraghs to the north. However it was at night that Aoife filmed her video which revealed amazing skies littered with stars. Congratulations Aoife we are so proud of you and wish you a safe journey on your travels to the USA in February.

The senior cycle art students visited the Irish Museum of Modern Art (IMMA) in Dublin yesterday to view the 'Xenogenesis' exhibition by the Otolith group. This collective's pioneering artworks address contemporary social and planetary issues, the disruptions of neo/colonialism, the way in which humans have impacted the earth, and the influence of new technology on consciousness. Afterwards, at the National History Museum, the students had the opportunity to see the ancient artefacts they have studied as part of their Leaving Cert curriculum. Other works of fine art were explored on our final stop to the National Gallery of Ireland where they displayed pieces from the gallery's permanent collection. The students got to see contrasting traditional works to the IMMA, such as 'The Taking of Christ' by Caravaggio. After the tours, the students set about making notes and sketches and then had some free time at Liffey Valley Shopping centre to enjoy the festive atmosphere.
