Transition Year
If any TY 2021-2022 student is interested in this competition please let me know ty@staugustines.ie
You may have heard of I-LOFAR, a state of the art radio telescope in the Irish Midlands. A lot of our researchers at I-LOFAR are solar physicists who study the Sun, our closest star. Our researchers are also involved in other projects, one of which is the European Solar Telescope (EST).
We are delighted to share with you that the team at the EST have announced a new educational contest, "The Sun at a glance".
This European-wide competition is aimed at 3rd and 4th year students (14-16 year olds) to promote scientific careers and multidisciplinary collaborative work. In small groups, guided by a teacher, students will have to investigate our star and present an infographic (images and text) that explains a solar phenomenon or some aspect of solar telescopes, including EST.
They are offering three amazing prizes :
The two best designs will win a trip to Tenerife (Canary Islands) to visit the Teide Observatory and the different European solar telescopes that operate there.
The third prize will be a H-alpha solar telescope for your school.
The registration period will open on June 1 and close on October 30, 2021. Once the registration has been made, infographics may be submitted until December 20, 2021.
This is a great opportunity and an ideal project for groups of Transition Year students throughout Ireland. We wanted to share it with you now so that you and your students might have a chance to think about it over the summer and be ready to apply when the new term starts in autumn! More information about the contest can be found on the website, est-east.eu/contest
