Invitation to participate in nationwide survey
Created : 04 Mar 2022, 7:51 AM
Archived : 04 May 2022, 12:00 AM
The Ombudsman for Children’s Office has invited pupils from the school to take part in a nationwide survey of 60 schools on the views and experiences of children during the Covid-19 pandemic.
This online survey will take place during school time next week. It will feature 15 multiple choice questions and take around 10 minutes to complete. Examples of the types of questions we will ask, include:
• Overall, do you think that Covid-19 has changed your life a lot/ a little/ not very much/ not at all?
• Since the Covid-19 pandemic began, how many days per week do you do sports or exercise (either inside/outside of school)?
Students and their parents can then decide individually whether they would like to participate, with a full information pack as well as consent and assent forms provided by us.
All answers will be anonymous and no personal student information will be shared or made public. The aim of the survey is to gain a better understanding of, and insight into, children’s views and experiences of the Covid-19 pandemic. A report on the findings will be published and shared it with all the schools that have taken part before it is made public.
Further information is available at www.oco.ie/i-am-a-young-person/covid-survey/
The online consent form can be found here: kwiksurveys.com/s/STsMZhkB
We hope that as many students in the school as possible will take part in the survey and that the report will start an important conversation about the impact of the pandemic on children and young people.

New Public Holiday

Following the Government decision of the 19th January 2022, a public holiday is to be held on 18 March 2022 in recognition of the efforts of the general public and Ireland’s frontline workers during the COVID-19 pandemic and in remembrance of people who lost their lives due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
In addition the Government has also decided that there will be a new annual public holiday from 2023 in celebration of Imbolc/St Brigid’s day, which will be the first Monday in every February, except where the 1st day of February happens to fall on a Friday, in which case that day will be a public holiday. The first such public holiday will be Monday 6 February 2023. The school year will reduce from 183 to 182 days for primary schools and 167 to 166 days for post primary schools. This will take effect for the current school year 2021/22. This additional bank holiday will not impact on the standardised breaks set out in circular 0005/2020.
The school will be closed on Monday, 21st March in lieu of Public holiday on 18th March.

Return to School, Monday, 28th February

Recent government announcements will have an effect on the opening of the school next Monday and there will be a certain amount of apprehension all round. We have received advice as follows:
1. Classroom layout returns to pre-covid format
2. It is no longer a requirement for staff or students to wear a mask in school however many members of the school community (especially those in 3rd and 6th year) will wish to
continue to wear them. Funding to purchase PPE including masks will continue
3. Funding to support enhanced cleaning to minimise risks of COVID-19 will continue for the rest of this year and will be reviewed in advance of 2022/23 year
4. We will continue to promote good hygiene with hand washing or use of hand sanitiser
5. The requirement to stay at home if you have symptoms remains, both for students and staff. One of the key messages to manage the risks of COVID-19 is to do everything practical to
avoid the introduction of COVID-19 into the school
6. Parent teacher meetings will resume
7. There is no longer a requirement to restrict visitors to the school and we can revert to the normal arrangements
8. Caution will be advised over the next few weeks
While living with COVID-19 restrictions has been difficult, the lifting of COVID-19 restrictions in schools will also be challenging and will require patience and tolerance all round. That said, it will be great to start returning to some of the old normality.
