Green Schools in HFC

Our green school team have been working away to get HFC the green Flag for Water. Green School students completed "how spongy is your school" and "water ambassadors" programs and have used their knowledge to try to inform the rest of the school community. There have been water workshops for all 1st years, and TYs, on water usage and importance of conserving water. This was run by Ms Tierney and Ms O Sullivan. The students learnt that 1 in 10 people lack access to clean water, the amount of water our clothes take to make and showers/toilets take to work, that rainwater and rivers in Ireland are contaminated, and how we can take steps to combat these issues! The Green School team are now organizing a Clothes Swap event. All students are asked to bring in good clean clothes they don't wear over the next few weeks. There will then be a Clothes Swap event when students who brought in an item can take something else. This event is to highlight the amount of water and resources our clothes take to make, and perhaps reduce our consumption by swapping instead of letting the clothes go to landfill. In March there will be another HFC beach clean day. There will also be a HFC Walk for Water event to highlight that girls in developing countries walk 6km for clean water and carry 20liters of water daily for their families. Green Schools is always looking for new members and hopes HFC students will get involved in their events.

Accenture Girls in Analytics Final

Congratulations to Keelin Boyhan, Sophia Byrne, Aoibheann Conlon, Elizabeth Ichim and Amelie Silvestre who reached the Accenture Girls in Analytics Final and presented their project in Accenture on Tuesday 17th December. Thank you to Ms McCauley who worked with the students, her feedback is below.

On the day, the students stood up in front of the audience, introduced themselves, smiled and presented like this was something they did every day.  They delivered the most entraining presentation and almost won!   They didn't read from cards or slides.  They took the audience through a story and were entertaining, professional, while building upon their analysis.

When working on the project, the students were working with some real world factors, such as working with team members whom were not their normal friend group, trying to find time with classes and other projects competing for both their time and attention and figuring out new software. They did every piece of the analysis and pulled together the presentation by themselves. They helped each other and worked collaboratively, like a professional team in the real world of work.  The Accenture MD, Noelle Doody, who sponsored the event, told Ms McCauley that she thought the team were very impressive.

Well done!
