What a week TY's had last week! Carlingford was a great success despite the patches of bad weather, which unfortunately squashed our hopes of getting out on the water. Well done to all students involved, they bonded well, created new memories, and walked the legs off themselves. It was a fantastic achievement that all students completed their Bronze Gaisce Adventure Journey on Wednesday and Thursday! After a well rested weekend, TY's were back in bright and breezy Monday morning with another busy week including Toastmasters and a new set of subject rotations. 17 OLS headed over to Terenure College on Thursday to participate in their first-ever Toastmasters. Day one included an Ice breaker challenge where each student introduced their neighbour to the group. Elections took place for important roles within the group, the roles filled by our students included vice president and secretary. Students are now all set for next week where they will begin their speeches. The best of luck and well done to all our students involved. TY had their first rotation this week through the following subjects: Careers, SPHE, Psychology, and Drivers Education. This week students had the opportunity to sign up for the following: Model United Nations (MUN), Homework Club, Sign Language, RCSI Open Day, and TY Lab Leaders. Word on the corridors is that The Great TY Bake Off is due to make its appearance shortly! Now is the time to polish off those cookbooks and get in some practice bakes! Next week, sees our first TY Enterprise Fair of the school year, on Wednesday, where our Enterprise class will showcase their Products to first and fourth years. The TY Enterprise class is also in full swing with the TY Hoodies. Students have been given the opportunity to voice their thoughts on all the options that are available. Complete the Google Form now and have your voice heard. Next week brings with it Maths week where our students will be involved in the TY Maths Scavenger Hunt and Peter Problem. We also look forward to Sign Language starting next week with 3 groups in participation. The OLS Careers Department together with the TY Team is delighted to be welcoming a school visit by IADT next week. They will speak to our students about all IADT has to offer including their range of new courses. TY's will be participating in Active Consent later in the year. Active Consent have scheduled two Parents, Guardians, and Careers Seminars which parents of TY students can attend to learn more about Active* Consent and what your child will be engaging with in the Active Consent workshop later in the year. To register for the event click the following link; www.eventbrite.ie/e/active-consent-parents-guardian-carer-seminar-tickets-414044577477 Many thanks, Just a gentle reminder to those who have signed up for Sign Language, barista, or Run In The Dark, please make sure payment has been paid in order to secure your place. Last but by no means least well done to all student who participated in and collected monies for Goal’s Jersey Day.

This week’s book recommendation is the historical fiction novel “The Hypnotist” by Laurence Anholt. It follows the story of the two main characters Pip and Jack Morrow. Pip is plucked from an orphanage and hired as a farm hand. But Pip is black. The farmer and his wife are white. And this is 1960’s America, where race defines you. Jack Morrow has left his native Ireland dreaming of a new life in the American Deep South. He has certain skills in hypnotism and mind control that he mostly keeps hidden. Pip and Jack’s lives become inextricably linked as the heat of racial tension builds to a terrifying storm. This book is available in the school library.

Do you like reading? Do you like a challenge? If you have answered YES to the above questions, then Book Bingo is for you! Book Bingo is a reading challenge that is suitable for everyone! The rules are below. Everything will be available in the library so drop in if you want to pick up the sheet and get going! How it works: There are sixteen boxes in the grid. Each one describes a different type of book. The aim is to read as many of the different types of books that you can, write the title in/under the relevant box, and have it signed by the Librarian. If you complete at least one line or more you will receive a certificate and prize at the end of the year. The more you complete the better the certificate and prize! Only one box may be filled per book read. For example, Twilight may fall under the “Best Seller” box and the book with a non-human character, but only one of those boxes can be filled with Twilight. You have until the end of the school year to complete as many boxes as you can (May 2023). Good Luck and Happy Reading!!
