Register of Electors Information
Created : 08 Nov 2024, 4:40 PM
Archived : 08 Jan 2025, 12:00 AM

Following the implementation of the Electoral Reform Act 2022, a 16-year-old can now be added as a pending elector to the Register of Electors.

What does this mean for the students?

A person can register to vote if they are aged 16 or over, but they will not be eligible to vote until they are 18.

By registering at the age of 16, it means that a local authority will be able to automatically move a person to the live electoral Register once they reach the age of 18.

When an election or referendum is announced and if the pending elector will turn 18 years old on or before polling day, they will receive a Polling Information Card and will be eligible to vote.

Students can register on-line at www.Voter.ie. The requirements for filling out the form or registering on-line are:

·         Date of Birth

·         You must be 16 years old or over to apply

·         A PPS number is required (if a student has no PPS number the form must be stamped in a Garda station or a Local Authority Office with photo proof of identity)

·         An Eircode is required
