U17 Metropolitan League
Colaiste Choilm 3 v. St. Declan's College 3 Moran (2) McKay
On a blustery Wednesday afternoon, St. Declan's College and Colaiste Choilm treated spectators to an entertaining and competitive league match.
The home side took the lead after 15 minutes, but St. Declan's replied through an opportunistic strike from Tristan Moran. It was a fine strike from Moran just before halftime which then gave St. Declan's a 2-1 lead.
St. Declan's were in the ascendancy in the early exchanges of the second half. This was due in no small part to the energy and discipline of the defence and midfield, with Warren O Hora and Gavin Byrne forming a solid partnership. The midfield of Conor Downey and Sean Hogan were also working very well together.
Their dominance eventually told and some nice interplay from Sean Lundberg and Lee McKay allowed McKay to finish clinically. That should have been that at 3-1 but with St. Declan's tiring Colaiste Choilm were able to score somewhat against the run of play.
The home side now had the momentum and they scored the equaliser with five minutes to go. Despite this crushing setback, the St. Declan's players refused to lie down and went straight up the other end in search of the winner. The referee blew the final whistle to bring the pulsating contest to an end.
The draw leaves St. Declan's with two points from two games in the league so far. They must now beat Beneavin College next week in order to progress to the knockout stages. If the team play to their potential for the full 90 minutes they have every chance of progressing.
