Dear Parents / Guardians,
Today marks national Safer Internet Day 2023. It serves as a reminder that how our young people use the Internet and what they can be exposed to online, is a real cause for concern. The theme for this year’s SID 2023 is ‘Together for a Better Internet’ with a focus in Ireland onpromoting inclusivity and respect online.
This year our emphasis in school is on taking personal responsibility for our online presence and behaviour. Our student ABAs have presented the thought ‘The internet is written in pen, not pencil’ as a reminder that each digital footprint lasts a very long time and is not easily erased. Online, personal safety and personal responsibility are intertwined. Posting with kindness and respect is as important as managing location information or privacy settings.
Our students will continue to address a broad spectrum of cyber safety issues in school. However, parents and guardians face the challenge of helping our young people to manage their social media safety, privacy and behaviour and it can seem overwhelming.
The webwise.ie website offers loads of current information / video clips etc.to help parents / guardians support their child in this ever-changing online world, including suggestions on how to communicate with teenagers on different aspects of social media that you may feel are a specific concern. Webwise is the Irish Internet Safety Awareness Centre which is co-funded by the Department of Education and Skills and is co-financed by the European Union’s Digital Europe programme

Happy Safer Internet Day 2023.
Kind regards,
