Stand Up Awareness Week is Ireland’s largest anti-LGBTI+ bullying (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, plus) campaign in second-level schools. BeLonG To’s 12th Stand Up Awareness campaign takes place next week from November 16th-20th.
Here in Naas CBS, student wellbeing is of paramount importance to us. In order to promote good wellbeing and a sense of inclusion within our school, we will be supporting Stand Up week 2020.
Throughout the week a board will be displayed in the assembly highlighting LGBTI+ terminology and the various flags used within the LGBTI+ community. Supports for students both in school, locally and nationally will also be displayed. In addition to this, lessons will be taught throughout the week in SPHE/Wellbeing classes to raise awareness of LGBTI+ matters.
On Friday, 20th November, we are asking staff and students to get involved in the Rainbow Ragday to show support to the LGBTI+ community. We are asking each year group to wear a specific colour jumper, t-shirt or jersey:
1st Years - red
2nd Years - orange
3rd Years - yellow
4th Years - green
5th Years - blue
6th Years - purple
This Stand Up Awareness Week we are asking students to #ComeIn so no one has to come out.
As coming out is not all ‘rainbows’, some students and parents may need additional support. Please see the list of PDF supports attached.

Green Schools Award

The work undertaken by The Green-Schools Committee addresses Environmental Themes which span over a two year period. Then, if the Committee sufficiently addresses these themes and completes the seven steps outlined by Green-Schools during this two year period, they are awarded a Green Flag. So far Naas CBS has been awarded an Energy and a Recycling and Waste flag.
This past two years The Green Schools Committee has been working on 'The Water Theme' and was recently awarded The Water Flag. However, we had further success as the School was shortlisted for 'School of The Year Water Award' for the work The Green-Schools Committee did to obtain The Water Flag.
There were only four schools in the whole country who were in the running for this national award and each of these schools won an award for their Region.
Our School was the winner of The Midlands and Eastern Region and won a trophy and a handsome sum of money, which will be put to good use in the school.
While working toward putting forward our application for 'The Water Flag' the committee met weekly and tackled the seven steps of action over time. They formed a committee, conducted an Environmental review and created yearly and weekly Action plans. They monitored their progress as the year unfolded and encouraged staff members to link the water theme to their subject’s curriculum where possible. Throughout the two years the Green-Schools Committee informed the community of concerns relating to water and Climate Change with notice board news and vibrant displays and they also involved the school community in days of action. Finally they created their own Green Code for The Water Theme which they chanted through the Streets of Naas on one of their days of Action …” Turn off The Tap, Turn off The shower , Save Water every hour”
Well done again to Ms Cowper for her work with this committee and huge congratulations to the committee for all their success to date. The committee consists of Adam Lamont, Barney Hennessy, Conor Murphy, Jamie Moore, Samuel Boyle, Piotr Filipek and Philip Byrne.
Please see PDF attached for further information about the work and achievements of The Green Schools Committee and click the 'view gallery' to see some of the excellent work from this committee.
