3rd year Art students and their Art teachers visited The National Botanic Gardens, Glasnevin, Dublin 9 on Tuesday 14th of October 2019. The National Botanic Gardens of Ireland are an oasis of calm and beauty. It is a premier scientific institution and the gardens contain important collections of plant species and cultivars from all over the world. Our 3rd Art students attended an educational guided tour of the current sculpture exhibition called “Sculpture in Context” that is on display throughout the gardens, and in the gallery in the visitor centre. After lunch the students spent time exploring the gardens, glass house architecture and they gathered visual research by photographing and drawing from nature, architecture and sculptures on location from observation. The exhibition was called "Sculpture in Context" It presented a thought-provoking collection of sculpture work that bridges the gap between art and nature, organic forms and man-made objects. The natural setting of the National Botanic Gardens played a host to an impressive collection of contemporary works by over 120 Irish and international artists. Over 140 sculptures, from the surreal and simple to the fantastical, were found nestling in the shrubberies and standing in the shade of the trees throughout the extensive gardens, as well as throughout the ponds, Great Palm House, and Curvilinear Range, with smaller works exhibited in the Gallery in the Visitor Centre.
