2nd December 2019 Dear Parent/Guardian, I am writing to inform you of some literacy strategies running in Scoil Chriost Rí, which your daughter will be involved in. As a parent, I am sure you are well aware that students’ literacy levels in general are dropping. Today our understanding of literacy covers reading, writing, spoken language, digital literacy and critical thinking. This year in our school we are again attempting to continue with the ‘Wellread National Award’. We know that young people need to be motivated to read. This is a national initiative that attempts to foster a love of reading in schools so that students may develop and grow reading as a hobby and a habit. By promoting reading we can hope to build on students’ literacy levels and this, in turn, may benefit your daughter in all of her subjects. Our main initiative is ‘Book in a Bag’. For this we need every 1st and 2nd Year student to have a reading book in her bag at all times of the day. Your daughter will be encouraged to read this book throughout the day, when she has finished a task in class or is waiting for class to begin. We will also shortly launch our Drop Everything and Read initiate. Throughout the year we run Junior and Senior Book clubs ‘Nibbles and Novels’ at lunchtimes. I would also suggest you regularly remind your daughter of the importance of reading at home, in her spare time. To encourage this, on the back of this page I have enclosed a recommended list of reading books for your daughter. Perhaps one or two of these could be included among her Christmas presents as a stocking filler! The school library is also open at lunchtimes and your daughter can borrow a book for a two week period. Local town libraries, also have a great supply of teen fiction books and with their new online system users can request and borrow e-books for use on their devices. We hope this new programme will be enjoyable and beneficial for your daughter. Helen O’Donnell Principal Recommended Reads. 1. The Hate you Give: Angie Thomas (Black Lives Matter-Also a movie) 2.
