The Scoil Chríost Rí Well-Read Committee, led by 10 transition year students alongside Ms. Morkan, aims to promote literacy and reading within the school community. The committee emphasises the importance and benefits of reading, which include expanding vocabulary, gaining knowledge outside of the classroom and improving comprehension skills. The committee carries out initiatives such as book in a bag and drop everything and read, which means 1st and 2nd year students can read for at least 15 minutes every week. The committee does a word of the week, which is announced to the school. This helps students expand their vocabulary and enables them to use advanced vocabulary in their everyday life and schoolwork. They also have chosen a book for junior students from 1st year to 3rd year to read called “Sister Missing” by Sarah McKenzie and “The Tattooist of Auschwitz” by Heather Morris for senior students from 4th year to 6th year. These books are available to all students in the school library and a book club will be held in December to allow students to connect through their love of reading. The Scoil Chríost Rí Well-Read Committee plans to run events such as literacy table quizzes and much more. The Well-Read committee will continue to encourage teenagers to read and promote literacy to Scoil Chríost Rí.
