5th Year Art History Trip to Dunamaise Art Centre

Miss Kelly's 5th year Art History students visited the gallery space in the Dunamaise Art Centre Portlaoise, Co. Laois on Friday 28th of February 2020 to see the exhibition "UNLOCK". Tom Shortt, the exhibition curator and facilitator gave a wonderful personalised tour of the gallery space with the current exhibition of work by prisoners in the Irish prison system. This exhibition provides a unique insight on the number of people in custody who take up art as a means of self-expression and how participation in art and craft classes regularly unlocks genuine talent, giving rise to impressive examples of stained glass, ceramics, weaving, jewellery, painting sculpture, textiles, basket weaving, collage, photo-montage, digital art etc. showcased in UNLOCK. This gallery experience was the ideal place and a safe space for teenagers and their teacher to learn more about life in the prison system, and how art can be an outlet in many situations – fostering their empathy and understanding as well as exploring art as a subject in itself. The students found the experience to be "memorable, insightful, interesting, thought provoking and emotional."

This week we are celebrating and promoting sustainability in our school. The week is being run by the Green Schools and Development Education Committee. Everyday there is a different theme of sustainability to be promoted. Today’s theme is recycling. All students will be watching a short video clip on recycling and 1st years will have an activity to look forward to at lunchtime. We all need to be reminded of what is recyclable and what is not. Senior Basketballers complete the double by winning the League

Our U19A basketball team bet Loreto Abbey, Dalkey yesterday on a scoreline of 53-41. It was only a month ago that they claimed victory in the School Cup final in the same division. The team led by captain Ciara Byrne put on another fabulous display of the skills, agility and sportsmanship to play the game at the highest level, leaving nothing behind them in the court. Sarah Fleming was named MVP. True to the comradeship that this team displays, captain Ciara Byrne stood back and allowed 6th year members of the team, Amy Byrne and Sarah Fleming accept the trophy on behalf of the team. A huge congratulations to the team and their coaches, Mr. Critchley, Mr. Mahon and Ms. Poole on achieving such a feat, to claim the double in the same year. There are not many who have gone before and done it, and our name is added to the Irish schools basketball history. This victory was thoroughly celebrated with the school coming out on force to welcome the team home. The team, represented by Amy and Sarah, thanked the school, coaches, parents and family for all the support they had been given. A special mention went to the supporters who travelled up and raised the roof in the Arena with chants of support. #scrabú
