Another busy week for TY’s! Word on the street is TY is a busy year with lots of things to sign up to and get involved with.
During pastoral care this week all students were given their Gaisce record sheets and many have already started filling in their week’s activities. Well done to all!
Our Reps had a busy day today as they started sprucing up the TY Noticeboard. It is already packed with signups and Gaisce information.
Our Active School Flag class was presented with their very active whistles and badges today. They also launched their first OLS Community activity today, Run In The Dark, which will take place at 5:30pm on Tuesday 15th November. This is a global movement to help cure paralysis in our lifetime. Our ASF class together with their year group will run/walk 5km for this fantastic charity. House point will be up for grabs on the day as will house face paint. The more colour and lights on the evening the better!
Meanwhile our TY Journalism class had a busy Friday taking class photos of the whole school. We look forward to seeing these in the YearBook at the end of the year.
Science classes have completed their first rotation this week. Students so far have enjoyed one of the following: Biology, Physics, Chemistry, Ag. Science, CSI, Coding or Digital. Next week they will begin their second exciting rotation.
All our Maths students today finished their first Career Mathways block - The Veterinary Nurse. Career Mathways is a novel and exciting, Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) funded project designed for Transition Year students. The project was designed by a team of mathematics education researchers based in EPISTEM, the national centre for STEM education based in the University of Limerick. The project seeks to promote the awareness and engagement of the Irish public with science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). The initiative aims to highlight the mathematics underpinning a variety of careers, as a way of enhancing student engagement across all STEM subjects. Different types of mathematics are explored in a variety of careers and highlight how important it is to have a good understanding of mathematics and be proficient in the subject. The blocks we engage with serve to make mathematics more visible and fascinating to students and help answer the common question “Where will I use this again?” We look forward to exploring Medicine next week with Prof. Derek O’Keeffe, a clinical physician. Derek will describe the important role that mathematics plays in the work of a doctor.
Carlingford is fast approaching. Please see details attached relating to Carlingford. We also ask that students check their Google Classroom for important documentation relating to the impending Adventure!
The deadline for the first block of work experience is nearly upon us. The google form document is available to all students on Google Classroom. It is vital that they record their placement details. Please ensure this is done by next Friday the 23rd September.
There have been a large number of sign ups available to students this week. These include Toastmasters (due to start next week), Run In The Dark (15th November), TY Maths Club and TY Writing Competition. We also had final calls for Barista and Sign Language sign ups. Next week we look forward to TY Hockey Coaching and Maths Club beginning.
Please check in with your daughter to see what she has signed up for. All application forms are on the TY Google Classroom and she can register for Gaisce on www.gaisce.ie.
We would kindly ask all Parents/Guardians to make sure the TY permission Sip has been completed in the Consent section of the APP. NO SLIPS, NO TRIPS!
Finally, our first TY Development Day is Monday week, the 26th September. All details relating to the day will be released early next week. Keep your eyes peeled!
