What an exciting start to this week with all our TY’s engaging in their first Development Day. TY1’s were brought back in time and experienced a multitude of attractions our city has to offer. From looking up phone numbers old-school in a 1950’s telephone directory to appreciating a first edition James Joyce’s ‘Ulysses’ and blowing an air raid siren, students got a sense of what life was like in Dublin from World War 1 right through the 1916 rising to present day Dublin filled with Music from U2. Their next stop was the State Apartments at Dublin Castle. Here it was almost like being on the set of Bridgeton making their Debutante Ball appearance. They visited St. Patrick’s Hall which has not only hosted American Presidents including Richard Nixon, Ronald Reagan and John F. Kennedy, but also the late Queen Elizabeth II during her State visit back in 2011. The day wasn't completed without a further Historical EPIC journey through the Irish Emigration Museum. TY2’s took part in the Close Encounters Self Defense Course. The focus of the course is on the ability to defend oneself without complicated techniques. The techniques taught to the TY’s will allow them to defend themselves against a variety of conflict situations including punches, kicks, blunt weapons, knives, defense and escapes from the floor, grabbing attacks, bladed weapons, psychological self-defence, voice commands and personal protection theory. TY3’s explored many of the historic beautiful churches that Dublin city has to offer, while also engaging in a voyage of stillness, inward reflection and prayer. TY4’s had a first class day as they completed their certified first aid course. This valuable course equipped our students with the knowledge to be the difference between life and death. Learning first aid helps to improve self esteem as well as teamwork and communication skills. Areas covered include but are not limited to CPR and Intro to the use of AED, head injuries, diabetes, asthma and approaching an accident. Finally TY5’s had a whale of a time at Dublin Zoo. headed to Dublin Zoo. The morning started off with the Zoo’s Conservation Module. This outdoor module began with a history of zoos, looking at Dublin Zoo as a case study. It then covered the role of zoos in modern conservation, their importance for the breeding of endangered species and their role in reintroduction programmes. Focusing on species within Dublin Zoo, the group discussed the conservation challenges faced by these species and how the Zoo supports these species in the wild. After the morning module and lunch in the sunshine all students took a tour of the Zoo. Only five more sleeps! The much anticipated Carlingford trip is nearly here. The excitement from both students and teachers is almost at peak level. For those that still have monies, medical forms and trip rules still outstanding please ensure they are submitted by Monday at the latest. All these documents are vital for the trip. Please see attached a letter outlining the final details for the trip. Bed packs will be provided so there is no need to bring pillows or duvets. Please do not bring anything valuable. Finally please make sure to bring hiking boots or comfortable runners together with appropriate socks for the Gaisce Hike. The OLS Careers Department together with the TY Team are delighted to announce a school visit by IADT. They will speak to the whole year group on Friday the 25th October about all IADT has to offer including their range of new courses.
