Hi everyone Saibh, Alannah and Lucy here, as part of the TY journalism class we will be contributing to the weekly TY update and we’re excited to tell you what we have been up to!
This week the TY’s were super busy! The week kicked off with the TY active flag students dodging in and out of different PE classes to run the whole school dodgeball competition. The winning teams will go head to head with the teachers next week, a competition we are all excited to see!
Maths week this week had the TY’s outside hunting for treasure (or in this case Maths sums!). Ms. Bateman’s TY Maths class designed posters with Maths problems on them for outside each classroom door allowing everyone to participate in Maths week even on their way to class.
The TY Enterprise fair that took place on Wednesday was a huge success. From sweets to lip glosses to guessing the weight of the pumpkin, this fair was well received by the delighted first and fourth year students who were brought to buy the products on offer. Well done and congratulations to all involved on a superb job.
On Friday all students across TY attended a talk by the IADT (Institute of Art Design and Technology). This helped them to get an insight into careers such as Psychology, Business, Media Studies and Photography as well as many others. Further information about IADT and its courses on offer can be found via this link iadt.ie/courses/?type=undergraduate
In regards to signing up for new and exciting things this week, the TY’s were given the opportunity to enter a short piece of fictional writing to the widely recognised annual Fighting Words competition. This is open to any student who has a love for writing and would like the opportunity to have their work published in the Irish Times Magazine. The deadline is the 22nd of December so anyone who is interested should start brainstorming and we hope to have a winning OLS student. TY’s had the opportunity to sign up to Free coding workshops from DojoMór 2022, which will be running online, from 10am to 1pm, Saturday 22nd October 2022, offering a range of activities to suit all ages and interests. Lastly, all students had an opportunity to express their interest in Zipit as an Extra Activity.
Next week the TYs will be busy with Reading Week and completing their practice Spanish and French aurals. Best of luck to all! As well as this, next Tuesday, TY students who are interested in studying medicine have been given the opportunity to attend a talk regarding the HPAT. We would strongly encourage anyone who is thinking about medicine as a future career to attend.
Just a gentle reminder that payment for Run In The Dark and the Introductory Barista course is now due for those who have signed up in order to ensure that you keep your place.
Jersey Day

Thank you to everyone who showed their support and wore their jersey in aid of GOAL on Friday. Lots of students and teachers turned out on many different colours of jerseys of a large variety of sports; GAA, soccer, camogie, hockey, basketball and even ice-hockey! We raised 1,566 euro for GOAL. Thanks to everybody who took part in jersey day! GOAL is an Irish international humanitarian response agency founded over 40 years ago. They work in many countries around the world in Africa, Latin America, the Middle East and Ukraine in Europe. GOAL works with communities that are dealing with extreme poverty and crisis. So as you can see it's a very worthy charity to be supporting. This would not have been possible without you.
Many thanks
The OLS charity committee.

This week’s book recommendation is “Flying Tips for Flightless Birds” by Kelly McCaughrain. It is set in a circus school where twins Finch and Birdie Franconi are stars of the flying trapeze. But when Birdie suffers a terrifying accident, Finch must team up with the geeky new kid, Hector Hazzard, to form an all-boys double act and save the family circus school. Together they learn to juggle the demands of friends, family, first love and facing up to who they are – all served up with a dash of circus-showbiz magic. This book is available in the school library.

B - The Hunger Games Series
C - Game of Thrones Series
L - Jacqueline Wilson Books

Friendly Friday at OLS

Today, the 1st years took part in Friendly Friday.
Friendly Fridays are where students in each class pick a name of one of their classmates out of a bag (completely random) and their task is to be friendly to that person on Friday. Students are asked to go out of their way to do something kind for that person and spend time with that person. The one rule is that they are not allowed to spend money as it is not about buying a gift.
Friendly Friday on the 21st of October was a huge success. Students received baked goods, compliments and one even got a crochet cat! Students really showed their school spirit and creativity on Friday.
Why do we do friendly Fridays?
Ms.Donlon had the idea for friendly Fridays to spread kindness and to encourage Friendships.
We were delighted that friendly Friday was such a success, and we hope it can continue to be so in the future.
