SRI LANKAN NEW YEAR

Sinhalese New Year, is known as Aluth Avurudda in Sri Lanka. It is a Sri Lankan holiday that celebrates the traditional New Year of the Sinhalese people in Sri Lanka. It is celebrated on the 14th April and traditionally begins at the sighting of the new moon. According to Sinhalese astrology, New Year begins when the sun moves from Meena Rashiya (the house of Pisces) to Mesha Rashiya (the house of Aries). It also marks the end of the harvest season and of spring. In Ireland, Sri Lankan New Year is celebrated in a hotel venue, for example in 2018 it was celebrated in the Radisson, and 2017 in the Talbot Hotel, Wexford. It starts with an informal greeting ceremony, and cultural rituals. After that - traditional and lively events and games among family and friends take place and there is a real sense of community. Examples of the traditional games and events - kamba adeema- tug-of-war, kotta pora- a huge pillow-fight, doughnut hanging from strings, placing the eye on the elephant, traditional dressing, dancing and musical performances . Dinner and musical performances and firework displays take place to end the night. -June Polgolla B5.

Today, Muslims across the world begin their journey through Ramadan. What is Ramadan? During the month of Ramadan, Muslims don’t eat or drink between dawn and sunset. This is called fasting. Yes not even water... They eat in the morning before the sun comes up and again in the evening when the sun sets. Why is Fasting important? Fasting is important during Ramadan as it allows Muslims to devote themselves to their faith and come closer to Allah. Fasting is one of the five pillars of islam, which form the basis of how Muslims live their lives. The other pillars are faith, prayer, charity and making pilgrimage to the holy city of Mecca. Ramadan is also a time for spiritual reflection, prayer, doing good deeds and spending time with family and friends. Normally, people will make a special effort to connect with their communities and reach out to people who need help. Does everybody fast? Not everybody fasts during Ramadan. Children, pregnant women, the elderly and those who are ill, or who are travelling, don’t have to fast. What happens at the end of Ramadan? There is a special festival to mark the end of Ramadan. This is called Eid al-Fitr-the festival of the breaking of the fast. It begins when the first sight of the new moon is seen in the sky. To learn more, please watch the following video.
