What a show stopper of a week! The much anticipated Bake Off Final took place this week. Nineteen of our TY’s battled it out in the inaugural OLS Great TY Bake Off to be crowned Baking Champion. Anticipation grew amongst the judges and our TY’s did not disappoint. With points being awarded under five different categories competition was fierce. Students’ creativity was flowing with House Cakes, Cookie Monsters, Christmas trees, Snowmen and Owls all making appearances. After a show stopping performance by all, Sophie Gorman was crowned Great TY Bake Off Champion for 2021. All TY Students engaged in Cork Film Festivals, Intinn. The aim of the programme is to encourage greater awareness of mental health and wellbeing issues and support for young people, to stimulate conversation in the classroom and between peers, and to provide strategies for resilience. This week saw all our TY’s engage in their second Development Day. TY1’s had a first class day as they completed their certified first aid course. TY2’s took to the airways as they experienced the amazing mobile recording studio brought right to the OLS doorstep. They benefit from professional industry training, honed their presentation skills and enjoyed recording their own radio segments in the high spec studio. TY3’s were brought back in time and experienced a multitude of attractions our city has to offer. From looking up great grandparents in a 1950’s telephone directory to appreciating a first edition James Joyce’s ‘Ulysses’ and blowing an air raid siren, students got a sense of what life was like in Dublin from World War 1 right through the 1916 rising to present day Dublin filled with Music from U2. After this little visit, they trotted down Grafton Street struggling to avoid the black Friday sales! Their next stop was the State Apartments at Dublin Castle. Here it was almost like being on the set of Bridgeton making their Debutante Ball appearance. They visited St. Patrick’s Hall which has not only hosted American Presidents including Richard Nixon, Ronald Reagan and John F. Kennedy, but also Queen Elizabeth II during her State visit back in 2011. The day wasn't completed without a further Historical journey through EPIC, the Irish Emigration Museum. Finally TY4’s explored many of the historic beautiful churches that Dublin city has to offer, while also engaging in a voyage of stillness, inward reflection and prayer. A big well done to those who participated in the Microsoft Product Management Workshop this week. We wish all those taking part in the UCD School of Physics Workshop next Monday well. Also congratulations to a number of our students who have been accepted into the Trinity College School of Computer Science and Statistics Workshop. It is fantastic to see so many of our students develop their STEM skills. Speaking of which, The Engineers Ireland STEPS Programme is now open for applications. Should any student wish to apply please contact Ms. Phelan for the extra relevant information needed for the application form. Next week will see our budding Entrepreneurs visit the "Gifted Craft Fair" in the RDS. A gentle reminder not to forget your consent forms and payments are now due. It is great to see so many of our students sign up for the qualified Barista training course. Easy Payments Plus is now open for you to complete the process. We look forward to fresh coffee smells filing the OLS corridors. The excitement is already building for the much anticipated TY Carlingford Trip. A gentle reminder that the booking deposit is due this coming Wednesday the 1st December. The week must not pass without Congratulating our TY students on demonstrating such a strong OLS spirit and giving back to the community. Today whilst out on their Development Day a group of students pooled together their money and provided more than a dozen homeless people with hot drinks on this cold winter's day. Our students spoke of the appreciation they have for the warmth, love and shelter they have in their lives and how difficult it is for so many especially as we approach Christmas.
