Summerhill U-17 Soccer Team Win Against Colaiste na Coiribe

Summerhill College vs Colaiste na Coiribe U17 Football 11/1/18 K.O 12:30 Match report by TY student Conor McGowan Summerhill College ended their final Connacht U17 Group stage bout in fine style, securing a 7-1 win away to Galway side Colaiste na Coiribe. Having entered the game with a win and a draw, victory would be imperative to the Sligo school’s further progression in the competition. Despite the number of injuries (and suspensions) that the blues were forced to adapt to, they took an early lead after less than 15 minutes when Tyler Stallard found the net after an incisive move in front of goal, assisted by captain Adam Lynch. Overcoming fine defending and goalkeeping from the home side in the first half, Stallard once again capitalised on another goalmouth chance 5 minutes later, this time assisted by Daniel Gray Harrigan, which saw Summerhill take a comfortable 2 goal lead. Intricate passing and fine play through the centre of the park meant that it was only a matter of time before Summerhill found the net once again. Stallard was involved yet again, this time assisting Kailum Burns to send Summerhill into the dressing room with a 3 goal cushion. H.T. Summerhill College 3-0 Colaiste na Coiribe The Sligo lads showed no signs of complacency to begin the second half as Burns got his brace within 5 minutes, again a well worked play at the edge of the box. Consistent pressure on na Coiribe’s defence would suggest that more goals were imminent, but the Galway opposition showed no signs of giving up, displaying fantastic resilience. The Summerhill defence seemed to be the unbreakable force on the day, showing incredible persistency and courage both aerially and otherwise. Substitutions in the 56th minute saw Jason Devaney replace Daniel Gray Harrigan and Oscar Toomey replace Kailum Burns. More substitutions followed soon after with Niall McDermott and Cian Basquille being brought on with 15 minutes to go. McDermott found his way onto the scoresheet little over 5 minutes after his arrival onto the field displaying clinical positioning and striker’s ability, making it 5-0. But na Coiribe weren’t finished yet. An exceptionally well-struck long range goal saw the ball fly into the top corner, pulling back a goal for the home side. A missed penalty from Lynch ten minutes from time did not seem to faze him, as the na Coiribe supporters were silenced when the captain redeemed himself 5 minutes later, bagging his first goal of the game. To put an end to a fantastically dominant display of football from Summerhill College, young Irish international Kailin Barlow neatly slotted home the side’s 7th goal of the game. Summerhill College will now progress to the next stage of the Connacht U17 Schoolboy’s Competition. Final score Summerhill College 7-1 Colaiste na Coiribe

Deacon Frank in association with the Pope John Paul II Awards and Ms. McCann, the Chaplain of Summerhill College asked if I could attend a Mass at the RTE studios in Dublin celebrating the 10-year anniversary of the JP2 Awards. I was very honoured to have been chosen out of the numerous JP2 participants from the Diocese of Elphin, and have the opportunity to represent my diocese and Summerhill College during such an important occasion. It was a long trip up with an early 6:00 AM start to the day but I was able to meet a variety of students from all across the country with every county being represented. The Choir who performed at the studio were a lively bunch from the North and played/sang beautifully during the televised mass. Before we went live I had the opportunity to talk with the Bishop of Derry, Donal McKeown where we had an interesting discussion on the youths of today and their involvement with religion. Overall it was a great experience to see how RTE went about their business; the mass itself was also enjoyable with Bishop Donal, the music performance and the students who renewed my understanding of young people and religion in Ireland today.
