Catholic Schools Week took place from the 28th of January to the 4th of February. To begin the celebration of this week our Transition Year and 5th year students who are completing the Pope John Paul II Awards participated in a Mass in the Cathedral alongside students from the Ursuline College. Throughout the week reflections were read out over the PA system, allowing students to pause and reflect on the role of family, the school and the parish in the living out of faith. Students took part in a number of activities during their Religious Education classes including making posters, St. Brigid's crosses and going to the College chapel. 1st year students invited their grandparents in on Thursday to celebrate a special Mass which highlighted the importance of the grandparents in passing along the faith. This week provided the opportunity for our school community to reflect on what being a Catholic school means to us.

Musical Madness 2018
“If you can dream it, you can do it”- Walt Disney
Article by TY students Tom Ryan, Joseph Shannon and Padraig McGowan
Musical Madness was a musical like no other. It contained songs from many of the world’s most famous musicals such as Grease, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Hairspray, All Shook Up and much more. It featured 34 solo performances, a number of duets and trios, and some spectacular dance performances. The aim of the musical was to give people who don’t normally get a chance to perform their opportunity to shine.
The cast contained over 80 Mercy and Summerhill College students, mainly Transition Year students, with several fifth year students also involved. The director behind it all was Fintan Whelan, along with Musical director Noreen McIntyre, assisted by Sarah Dufficy. The show started out as a blank canvas and was developed with the input of both directors and students.
Rehearsals began at the end of September and ran once a week leading up to Christmas. People who wished to sing requested to perform the musical song of their choice at rehearsals and took it upon themselves to perfect it. After Christmas, rehearsals began to pick up, and choreography sessions began in the last two weeks leading up to the show.
Leading up to the opening night, there were many long days of rehearsals in the Summerhill College gym. The stage was set up with the help of the cast and we finished perfecting our dances with our choreographer Steffen Jorgensen. We would come in at noon and work until late evening. There was a rush of excitement late afternoon on Sunday as we finished our last rehearsal before the show.
On the opening night, the cast gave a wonderful, energetic performance with Mr Whelan saying it was “one of the most enthusiastic opening nights I was ever been involved in”. This was followed by another spectacular evening performance on Tuesday. The final show on Wednesday topped them all with an energetic and intense effort from each cast member. The Musical ended with a spectacular blast of songs from Hairspray. To quote Mr. Whelan, “it was the best school musical I have ever been involved in”.
Musical Madness 2018 was an amazing experience for all who took part. It gave everyone the chance to perform on stage, get out of their comfort zone and allowed everyone to have a lot of fun.

Summerhill College vs Ballyhaunis Community School 21/1/18 K.O 12:00
Match report by TY student Conor McGowan
Summerhill College proved themselves worthy of a place in the Connacht Senior Semi Final in what turned out to be a thrilling encounter with a strong Ballyhaunis side, overcoming them by a scoreline of 3-2 after extra time.
The game kicked off at 12:00 following a minute of silence for Alex McGourty, a former student of Summerhill College who died under tragic circumstances in a kayaking accident.
The two sides showed determination and bite right from the first whistle, including early displays of voracious tackling as well as passages of composed and creative football. Early dominant midfield action from the home side, both physically and technically, meant that the Ballyhaunis defence was soon tested by long-range efforts from Adam Lynch, soon followed by an attempt from Tyler Stallard.
Despite this, it was Ballyhaunis who were to eventually break the coveted deadlock. A neatly slotted finish past goalkeeper Ultan McKenna saw the Sligo side go 1-0 down in the 30th minute: The game suddenly posed a more serious challenge as the lads suddenly found themselves on the back foot.
Ferocious aggression and persistent attack would see the lead quickly disappear as a break down the left flank from Tyler Stallard resulted in Scott Lynch finding the back of the net from close range, drawing the two sides level.
Mere minutes before the sides took a break for half time, Summerhill once again found themselves picking the ball from their own net as a 1v1 opportunity was converted by the Ballyhaunis striker, giving Summerhill much to talk about heading into the dressing room at the interval.
Half Time - Summerhill College 1-2 Ballyhaunis
In the midst of consistent pressure from the away side’s attack, Summerhill once again drew level thanks to an ecstatic lob from none other than the man up top Kieran Prior that left the defence stunned and saw Ballyhaunis having to restart the play from tip not 5 minutes after the start of the second half.
After 40 minutes on back-and-forth attacks in an exhilarating display of end to end football, the final whistle called normal time to a halt and the two sides took 5 minutes to prepare themselves for extra time.
Both schools battled on, although weary, to the bitter end. As the possibility of penalties loomed with less than 10 minutes of extra time left to play, it was to be Summerhill who would clinch the winning goal. Adam Lynch’s searching cross found centre back Leo Doherty at the back stick, putting his height to good use and converting the chance with his head.
The Sligo side managed to hold out for the last 10 minutes until the final whistle granted them the relief they so deserved. Summerhill College will now progress to the Connacht Senior Semi Final and will face the provincial giants St Gerald’s Castlebar.
