Anti-Bullying Week: 27th November - 1st December
Created : 27 Nov 2017, 10:39 AM
Archived : 06 Feb 2018, 12:00 AM
This week is anti-bullying week at Summerhill College. Each day has a different focus and tutors and teachers will be covering different aspects of the issue of bullying and the schools anti-bullying policy throughout the week. Here are our thoughts for the day which will be announced each day by students over the PA system: Monday - Bullying Awareness Day This week is anti-bullying week. When someone repeatedly says or does something intentionally hurtful this is bullying behaviour. This behaviour is never ok. Our quote for today is "How you treat others says more about you than it does about them". Let us think for a minute about how we treat each other. Do we use our words and actions to build others up or to tear them down? Why do we do this? And how can we use our power for good? Make a special effort today to be more considerate in your words and actions to those around you. Tuesday - Random Act of Kindness Day Today is random act of kindness Day. Plato, a famous philosopher, said “Be kind for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle.” Sometimes we forget that everyone faces challenges in their lives. Showing kindness to one another, even when we mightn't think someone needs or deserves our kindness, is a sign of good character and moral strength. As a random act of kindness turn to the person beside you now (including your teacher) and say something kind to one another, it could be as simple as saying hello or giving them a compliment. Today lets try to spread kindness like confetti! Wednesday - Anti-bullying Day Today we focus on stamping out bullying in our school. In a bullying situation there are three people involved - the bully, the victim and the bystander. We want people who witness bullying to know that they have the power to stop bullying in our school. When bystanders stand up and speak out against bullying they make our school a happier and safer place for all. Remember our quote for today: “Strong people stand up for themselves. But the strongest people stand up for others.” What can you do if you see bullying happening in our school? How can you help? If you don't know, ask your teacher now! Thursday - Cyber-bullying Awareness Day Today is Cyber-bullying Awareness Day. Today we want people to learn to THINK before they post things online. THINK - T: is what I am posting true or factual information? H: is what I am posting going to be helpful to someone or of benefit to another? I: is what I am posting illegal, am I posting statements, images or videos which are against the law? N: is what I am posting necessary, do I really need to share this information online (remembering that anything I post online has a digital footprint and can always be found)? and finally K: is what I am posting kind, or is it going to hurt another persons feelings or reputation? Before you post anything online please consider the consequences of your actions and remember today's quote "The internet is not written in pencil but in ink, think before you post". Friday - Odd Socks Day "All Different All Equal" Today is our Odd Socks Day where we celebrate the fact that we are all different and all equal. Mother Teresa said "You can do what I cannot do. I can do what you cannot do. Together we can do great things." Our differences are what make each of us special and unique. However sometimes fear and a lack of understanding mean we use people's differences against them. Instead let us realize the value and importance of difference in our school community. Discuss with the person beside you how we all can make our school a place where everyone feels safe to be themselves and share these ideas with your teacher. This week let's all make a special effort to stamp out bullying in our school community by standing up and speaking out against bullying in all its forms!
