Boys Town Anniversary Celebration

On Tuesday December 12th a celebration was held in the College Chapel to mark the 100 year anniversary of the establishment of Boys Town in Omaha by past pupil of the College of the Immaculate Conception, Servant of God Fr Edward J Flanagan. In 1917 Father Flanagan saw the need to establish an orphanage for boys which took a new approach to juvenile care and it has grown into a national organisation providing help to children, families and communities.
Father Flanagan’s Boys’ Home accepted all boys, regardless of their race, creed or cultural background. The priest offered every child a new start in life, and he went to great lengths to seek out and bring in the neediest and most helpless. Father Flanagan died in 1948, but his successors have faithfully carried on his legacy and the mission he started at Boys Town. Today, at 100 years strong, Boys Town still follows many of the same principles and practices that originated with Father Flanagan’s vision.
Here in the College of the Immaculate Conception we also strive to live out many of the principles which Father Flanagan promoted as evidenced in the day-to-day life of the College and our exemplary pastoral care system The service marked the connection between Summerhill and Boys Town and we received a special video message from Mr Thomas Lynch, a historian at Boys Town to mark the occasion. Bishop Kevin Doran, Patron of the College, led the celebrations on the day for those gathered which included prefects, student council members, 6th year Religious Education classes, the Principal Mr Paul Keogh, the Chairperson of the Board of Management Rev Dr Michael Duignan and a number of other guests . Songs were sung, prayers said and reflections of past students of Boys Town were read out by our own students. Afterwards everyone gathered for refreshments in the College library. It is hoped that the special connection between Summerhill College and Boys Town will continue to grow from strength to strength in the years to come.

Over the past few weeks all of the TY and LCA students participated in a workshop facilitated by Youth Connect Ireland.
The aim of these workshops was to support the TY and LCA work experience programmes.
Students learned about their rights as student workers and as work experience placement workers and are now more familiar as to the employment laws that exist to protect them.
They also explored what working conditions were like in the past compared to now, what wages they should be receiving, how trade unions work, as well as participating in many hands on activities.
