The Board of Management of Summerhill College, Sligo has announced that Dr Jim Browne, former President of NUI Galway is to lead up a new association of past students of the College. The first meeting of the association’s executive took place in Sligo on the 30th May last. Dr Browne is himself a past student of Summerhill College. He is native of Athlone, Co Westmeath, and an engineering graduate of NUI Galway. He was Dean of Engineering, Registrar, Deputy-President and President of NUIG. A leading academic in the field of Engineering, he has a long record of achievement in educational leadership, strategic planning and change management. As president of NUIG he was actively involved in the development of the University’s own Alumni Association. Summerhill College has always enjoyed strong links with its past students and values their ongoing friendship and support. It is hoped that this new Alumni Association will enhance these links by providing structured opportunities for the College’s past students to connect with each other and with the College in a supportive capacity. Welcoming the announcement, the College Principal, Mr Paul Keogh said: “I would like to first of all thank Dr Browne for his generosity in lending his vast experience and talent to this task. I look forward to working with him on this project and hope it will be the focus for gathering our past students in support of the College community in the years ahead. I would also like to thank the many other past pupils and staff who are actively working to make this initiative a reality.” The new Association will be launched later in the year on December 27th 2018 with a Gala Ball in the Radisson Hotel, Sligo.
