This afternoon, Thursday 15 December 2016, we will be gathering in community to prepare for the coming Christmas season. The staff, students and religious brothers together with former teachers will join in celebration as we hold a ceremony of light around the Christmas crib followed by mass. Fr Michael O'Grady (school chaplin) will be the celebrant. We also are marking a special occasion in the lives of four of the religious brothers who live in the St Declan's community. Each one of them, this year, is marking a major jubilee milestone - Br. Felix Donnelly (75 years), Br Tom Boyhan (70 years), Br Fred Fox (70 years) and Br Seamus Gill (70 years). We offer them our congratulations on this remarkable contribution to religious life and education in Ireland.

On a freezing morning in St Declans, our U16 faced an unbeaten Adamstown Community School in the quarter final of the Eastern Regional League. At the end of the first quarter there was nothing between the teams at 10-10. But an epic battle was about to unfold. Adamstown had the U15 stars of Liffey Celtics in Velenzuela and Atunnna and we had our own stars in Howe and Keating. Liam Keating only last night was rewarded by making the final 60 for the Ireland U15 International selection. At the end of the half with great work inside from Philip Ani and Dahlan Hanza, Declans led 29-26. The Adamstown team started strong in the third quarter and took the lead for the first time. A free throw from Keating in the final seconds, followed immediately by two from the Adamstown point guard drew the final quarter 40-40. Three minutes of extra time to follow. After 2 mins 59 seconds, with it looking like a second period of extra time looming, the whistle blew for a foul. Off strong rebounding, it could have been anyone. But the referees deemed the Adamstown 14 to have fouled our man Ervindas Biiuvydis to put him on the line to shoot 2. We missed the first, and as expected given Ms. Nolan's insistence on scoring 50% in free throws the second went in, a one point victory securing St Declan's progression to Regional Semi Finals and a shot at All Ireland Qualification. Top Scorer; Rory Howe 33 points -Ms Nolan
Shoebox Appeal Campaign

This year, 1st, 2nd and 4th year students took part in the Shoebox Appeal campaign. This campaign was held by the charity "Team Hope". The campaign involved students wrapping a shoebox in Christmas paper and filling the shoebox with presents. The presents would then be sent to children in poor countries as well as countries devastated by warfare. Children in Syria, Eastern Europe and parts of Africa will receive these presents. St. Declan's students generously included gift items such as copybooks, pencils and pens, toothbrushes and hairbrushes. Other items included were toys, hats, gloves and hard sweets. To us living in Ireland, these are every day items and things that we take for granted. To the children in Syria, Africa and Eastern Europe, these presents are a beacon of hope. The presents sent by our students bring rays of sunshine and happiness. It shows needy and poor children who think that the world has forgotten about them that we do care about them. The shoeboxes are delivered to schools, shelters, orphanages and family homes and bring excitement and laughter. Last year saw 89 shoeboxes gathered. For this year, the target was 100 shoeboxes. However, the St. Declan's students and members of staff smashed last year's number as well as the target and gathered a whopping total of 135 shoeboxes! A great showing of kindness and compassion by all who took part! A special thank you to Ms. Ní hÚnachain for organising the Shoebox Appeal in the school and collecting all the boxes given by the students and members of staff. Without the hardwork of Ms. Ní hÚnachain, this campaign would not have been possible! We also wish to thank the students and teachers as well as other members of staff who kindly took the time to wrap a shoebox and fill it with gifts that will help make a child somewhere in the world have a nice surprise and help make their hard lives a little bit easier. Great work everyone! -Ben Casey
