Cross Country Update: 13 students took part in the West Leinster Cross Country Meeting in the Phoenix Park on Thursday, 26th Jan. It was a bitterly cold day out in the park with strong winds that only made the running conditions tougher. Despite the harsh running conditions, our runners did extremely well. Well done to all runners who took part on the day. All runners ran a good race. A special congratulations to Dáire Finn who came 2nd in a very tight finish for the senior boys race and Seán Donoghue who came 1st in the junior boys race. Their dedication and hard work continues to pay off. Both Dáire and Seán go forward to represent St. Declan’s in the Leinster Cross Country Meeting. We would like to wish both athletes the best of luck and continued success in their next race. - Mr Burke

St Declan's Careers Fair was held in the gym on Wednesday and was a huge success! The Careers Fair gave students from 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th year the opportunity to talk to each of the representatives at the stalls set up. Students had done their research into the courses that they were interested in and career paths they were looking to go down in the days leading up to the fair. This allowed them to prepare questions to ask the individuals at the stalls. Universities and Institutes present at the Careers Fair were DCU, Maynooth, ITB and Coláiste Íde. Also present were UCD, NCI, Trinity, Coláiste Dhúlaigh, St. Pats and DIT as well as many others. One of our own students, Stephen Cushen who did fantastic at the BT Young Scientist, was giving a presentation to his fellow students on his new form of wireless communication using light known as Li-Pi at one of the stalls. Also among these stalls were members of An Garda Síochana, the Community Credit Union and various PLC colleges. The students loved the opportunity to talk to all of these groups about their futures and what is needed for them to achieve their desired careers. Thanks to Mr. Hayes and Ms. Tierney for organising the event as well as the students who helped set up the gym. - Ben Casey

Christmas is a time when many books are bought and many more given as presents. You may have some that you recieved and read over the last few weeks but no longer need. If so St Declan's Library will gladly provide a new home for them. We are looking for books of all sorts suitable to broaden the range on our library shelves. Students are asked to bring books for donation to school tomorrow morning and to leave them at the gate or in the Library before tutor class. We also wish to create a special research section and will happily receive history books for this collection. Thank you in anticipation of a wonderful response.

Cross country students took part in DCU’s Schools Invitational meeting on Wednesday, 18th January. Schools from all over the country had made their way to the DCU sports grounds for a day of cross country. A team of nine students respresented St Declan’s in the Junior Boys 2500m race. It was a tough course with both hills and hay bales to contend with. We would like to congratulate all runners who took part on the day. All runners did extremely well. We would, especially, like to congratulate Seán Donoghue who came first in the Junior Boys 2500m race. This is an amazing achievement, competing against runners from all over the country and in a race of over 130 runners. He ran an impressive race and continues to collect his first place medals and plaques. Well done Seán. The next cross country race is the West Leinster Schools race in the Phoenix Park on Thursday, 26th January. Good luck to all athletes taking part on the day! - Mr Burke *************************************************** St. Declan's College had a very busy day on Wednesday at Dublin City University. Sean Donoghue worked hard in his race and he was rewarded! Sean had a fantastic showing in the Junior Boys Race, finishing an impressive first. Keep up the good work Sean! Also running for St. Declan's College were Conor, Liam, Killian and Ian who were competing in a huge field of over 200 runners! The lads did great and should be very proud! Well done to all involved and as always thank you Mr. Burke. - Ben Casy
ST DECLAN'S COLLEGE WIN AGAIN AT THE BT YOUNG SCIENTIST AND TECHNOLOGY EXHIBITION 2017

Stephen Cushen is for the third year in a row the pride of St Declan's College Science Department. At Friday night's ceremony, Stephen was awarded first place in Senior Technology for his Project LiFi. The project, LI-PI, demonstrates the potential for transmitting data via visible light communication or Light Fidelity (Li-Fi) as it is more commonly known. Stephen built his own LI-FI circuit using visible light (flashing bulbs) to transmit data between 2 Raspberry Pis showing the results on a PC. Stephen remarkably built this circuit using a very small budget by comparison to the millions being spent on this infant technology by industry. To add to his sucess, Stephen went on to be awarded the NOKIA Bell Labs award for his work using Wireless Communication Systems. Stephen will be visiting the research labs shortly and will have access to their support as his work continues. The judges were hugely impressed by what Stephen had managed to achieve. At one stage, Stephen's LIPI was faster than the WIFI on offer by BT in the RDS. Stephen was visited by a large number of experts in the field, was interviewed by Silicon Republic, and his project cited as "the best" by the founder of the Raspberry Pi Foundation, when it was tweeted to over 1.7 milion followers. Stephen is now one of a very small number of individuals who hold five major awards from the BT Young Scientist and Technology competition, achieving this success in the 2017, 2016 and 2015 competitions. Well done to Stephen, his mentor Ms Nolan and Mr Duffy. - Ms Nolan Leo Varadkar Tweet Good project from Stephen Cushen at St Declans College, Cabra at @BTYSTE #dubw t.co/GLX7Id5ong
