The Department of Education and Skills has updated information to schools on Covid-19 (Coronavirus).
As our school had a number of students and teachers who flew out of Milan airport during the recent mid-term break on a school ski trip and on family holidays, St. Macartan's contacted the HSE for clarification and advice.
The advice is provided by the Department of Health and HSE Health Protection Surveillance Centre and following a meeting of the National Public Health Emergency Team and is as follows.
The HSE has advised that the school should not close.
They also advise anyone who has been to affected regions e.g. on our recent school tour or family holidays in the last 14 days and has a cough, shortness of breath, breathing difficulties or fever should self-isolate and phone their GP immediately.
Students who were not in the affected region should present for school as normal.
Anyone who has travelled from the affected regions on our recent school tour or on family holidays and has no symptoms and but would like further information should visit
www.hse.ie/eng/ for advice.
The Covid-19 affected regions are listed at present as mainland China, South Korea, Japan, Singapore, Hong Kong, Iran and the following regions of northern Italy - Lombardy, Veneto
Emilia-Romagna and Piedmont.
We are all reminded that the most important action we can take to protect ourselves from Covid-19 is regular handwashing and good respiratory hygiene.
As further advice or information is provided and issued to our school it will be posted on the
school App and website.

The First Lego League event was held in Combilift today.
Our first year robotics team won the best Innovation Project for their solution to improve a simple running track.
Their idea had multiple aspects which included upgrading the current running track at St. Macartan's to incorporate the old railway lines and converting both areas into physical and metal well-being areas, that can be used to complete Park Runs.
Both areas would also be used to promote and encourage biodiversity in our community and promote an interest in local history. Thank you Lego Ireland, Martin McVicar and Combilift for organising the event.

Online pornography - What is the harm?
A information meeting for parents on this very important topic will take place in the St. Macartan's College theatre on Tuesday February 25th at 7.00 pm. The meeting will be facilitated by Brigid Teevan.
St. Macartan's College will take part in an exploratory study for an educational response to early-adolescents use of online pornography. The study will be led by Brigid Teevan – Doctorate Student of Childhood Studies,
The project aims to explore how students, parents and teaching staff can develop the knowledge, skills, attitudes and behaviours to work in partnership to address early adolescents’ sexual education and, within this, access to online pornography. It also aims to improve effective parent-child-school discourse.
The project's objectives are to capture and give voice to the views, experiences and priorities of all stakeholders namely parents, students and teachers and to develop a holistic and integrated educational approach in dealing with pre and early adolescent exposure to online pornography.
