This message follows the message released by the principal earlier today.
As you are aware, new government announcements took place on Friday 10th April relating to this year’s Junior Cycle examination. Following a remote staff meeting and remote Board of Management meeting, which took place yesterday, the school’s reaction to the Department of Education's announcement was discussed.
As you know, school work for third years will proceed as normal with online classes continuing until the end of May. This decision was taken in the best interests of your son and to support him in achieving his full potential in his Junior Cycle Profile of Achievement (JCPA) which will be awarded to each student on completion of the Junior Cycle.
The Junior Cycle Profile of Achievement.
The JCPA reports on students’ overall achievement across a broad range of areas of learning in Junior Cycle from first through to third year. Even though Covid-19 has had a significant impact on the way subject material was delivered since March this year, your son will receive his JCPA. This offers students and parents/guardians a clear, broad picture of your son’s learning journey over the three years of junior cycle.
Areas recognised on the JCPA are :
Academic Achievement by way of subjects, short courses and Classroom-Based Assessments.
Other areas of learning your son has engaged in. This includes extra curricular and
co-curricular activities. All third years have completed an E-portfolio recording such activities. Your son will be provided with further guidance on how to complete this part of the profile.
Certain criteria will be taken into account by the school when grade descriptors in subjects and short courses are being awarded. This includes;
Results of Christmas and Summer examinations from first and second years and Pre Examinations .
Your son's participation in and completion of online work set by teachers since schools closed on March 12th.
Grade descriptors will range as follows
Distinction = 90% - 100%
Higher Merit = 75% - 89%
Merit = 55% - 74%
Achieved = 40% - 54%
Partially Achieved = 20% - 39%
Not Graded = < 19%
Therefore, it is extremely important that your son continues to engage with work set by teachers in order to maximise his potential and be fully rewarded for his efforts.
Based on the above information, I would urge you to discuss with your son the importance of engaging fully with schoolwork set by teachers from now until the end of the year. Please also discuss the implications of your son not engaging in his school work and the negative impact this may have on his JCPA .There is also a time for your son to potentially catch up on work missed.
Your son is a junior student and still requires parental guidance and direction. As partners in your son's education, could I ask you to regularly monitor his effort by checking that he has his work completed and that he connects with his teachers and seeks help when he needs it. Your son should have added you to his Google Classroom account as a guardian. As he prepares to enter senior cycle, this will encourage him to develop the key skills to become a responsible and independent learner.
Once again, thank you for all your support during these difficult and challenging times. Please do not hesitate to contact myself, your son’s Year Head Ms. McColgan or our school Junior Cycle Co-ordinator Ms. Marie Smyth. We will be more than happy to answer your queries.
We both look forward to meeting our third year students and parents online tomorrow Thursday at 7.00 pm. The link to this meeting was sent to third year students email accounts.
Signed
Sinead McColgan Third Year, Year Head
Marie Smyth St. Macartan’s College Junior Cycle Coordinator

Statement from St. Macartan’s College regarding the 2020 Junior Cycle Exams
Created : 22 Apr 2020, 12:50 PM
Archived : 22 Jun 2020, 12:00 AM
The Department of Education and Skills has confirmed that there will be no state certified Junior Cycle exams this year. At a meeting yesterday, staff agreed that it was very important for us to continue to remotely work with and engage our third year students. The school plans in so far as is possible to complete all Junior Cycle courses between now and June.
The school feels that it is also important to recognise students' efforts and achievements since joining our school three years ago. With that in mind, St. Macartan's College will award each third year student with a Junior Cycle Profile of Achievement. This certificate will be awarded based on student progress in all subject areas since first year, other areas of learning that the student has engaged in since joining the school, significant achievements like school awards, Classroom Based Assessment results and how well a student has engaged in online learning since March 13th last.
It is also proposed not to hold Junior Cycle exams in September or whenever students return to school. It is proposed instead to allow students transfer straight into TY or LCA once schools reopen. The Board of Management has agreed to and has sanctioned this proposal. Further details on the JCPA will follow this afternoon via the school app.
I know that many parents will want an opportunity to discuss this decision further. To facilitate this a Google Hangouts meeting for students and parents will take place tomorrow Thursday at 7.00 pm. The link to join this online meeting will be sent to your son’s school email account. Questions which students and parents may have can be addressed at that time.
I wish you all well, stay safe.
